Wildcats Fall in Three to George Washington

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Hannah Rau registered a team-high 14 kills, but the Davidson volleyball team fell to Atlantic 10 foe George Washington, 3-0 Friday night at Belk Arena. The defeat came by set scores of 25-18, 25-23 and 25-13.
Rau registered a .297 hitting percentage for Davidson (3-13, 1-5 Atlantic 10) as Rachel Earnhardt tallied seven kills with a .273 hitting percentage. Morgan Shannon paced the defensive effort with 11 kills to go with seven from Rau. Mary Harriet Moore had three blocks, while Emily Franklin and Michelle McNeight notching two stops.
Kelsey Newman totaled a match-high 19 kills on a .429 hitting to help George Washington (14-5, 5-1 Atlantic 10) to its second straight win. Chidima Osuchukwu added 16 kills, with Loren Williams and Maggie Skjelbred chipping in seven apiece. Maddy Doyle and Emily Clemens turned in 13 digs apiece.
Davidson sprinted out to a 10-4 lead in the opening set, before George Washington used a 9-3 run to even the score at 13. After trading points down the stretch, the Colonials extended their margin to 23-18, and took set point, 25-18.
Back-and-fourth play dominated the second set, which featured 12 ties and four lead changes. The Wildcats went on top 8-7 following a 4-0 stretch, but George Washington answered with a 6-3 run of its own to help move the score to 23-20, before a Newman kill put the frame away, 25-23.
It was all George Washington in the third as the Colonials opened a 20-11 advantage following an 11-2 stretch to seal the sweep with a 25-13 victory in set three.
Davidson will return to action next weekend as it travels to Fordham and Rhode Island. The Wildcats and Fordham Rams will first take to the court Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. before Davidson visits the Rhode Island Rams on Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. Both matches will be available via the Atlantic 10 Network.
