DURHAM, N.C. – Alan Reiter's golden goal in the 95th minute lifted Davidson to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over in-state foe Duke in non-conference men's soccer action Tuesday evening at Koskinen Stadium.
With their second win over an ACC opponent this season, the Wildcats improve to 6-1-3 overall, while the Blue Devils suffer their first home loss of the year falling to 5-6-1.
Reiter's fourth game-winner and team-leading fifth strike of the season, which was set up by Valeriy Sviderskiy, came off a blast from 15 yards out that deflected in off the cross bar.
"Playing at Duke requires belief, poise and unity," said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. "The guys tonight were tough, brave and connected. They earned it, and they will never forget it."
Trailing 1-0, Davidson's Shane Macnamara provided the equalizer off a penalty kick at the 70:18 mark.
Prior to Christian Fechter drawing a foul inside the box, the Wildcats created a number of scoring chances, including a low drive by sophomore Maxi Pragnell that caromed off the right post. Pragnell finished with four shots, including three in less than two minutes midway through the second half.
With less than 13 minutes left in the opening period, Matthew Slotnick snuck a header just inside the far post and out of the reach of the diving Matt Pacifici to put the Blue Devils up, 1-0.
Both teams finished with 17 shots, while Pacifici led both keepers with a season-high seven saves for the Wildcats.
Davidson will resume conference play with a 7 p.m. contest against St. Bonaventure Saturday evening at Alumni Stadium.
"The players' mindset has been superb. And I told them that in the bigger picture - outside our team and even our program - a lot of alumni, town residents and those that believe in the significance of the Davidson way will be lifted," commented Spear.
GAME NOTES: Last season the Wildcats had a 2-0 lead over Duke before falling 3-2 in overtime to the Blue Devils at Alumni Stadium... Tonight's win in Durham was Davidson's first at Duke since the 1990 campaign... Davidson has one ACC opponent (at Virginia Tech - 10/28) remaining on the schedule… Today is Davidson midfielder John Pace's Birthday...
