DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson volleyball team suffered its third straight loss Sunday as La Salle downed the Wildcats at Belk Arena by set scores of 25-20, 18-25, 25-18, 25-19.
Hannah Rau paced the offensive effort with 17 kills, while Sarah Fink registered 13 kills to go along with a .458 hitting percentage. Sophomore Emily Franklin, meanwhile, turned in six kills, three blocks and a .308 hitting percentage. Davidson also received seven kills and three blocks from Michelle McNeight with Kelly Friers adding seven kills and two blocks on the afternoon.
La Salle (7-15, 1-5 A-10) combined to hit .268 on the day with Laura Kulmeier turning in 16 kills, while Jennifer Whelan and Ashley Felton finished with 11 kills apiece.
After La Salle jumped out to an early 3-0 lead to open the first set, the Wildcats bounced back to cut the lead 14-13 thanks to an ace on a nice service run from Katriana Romanelli. The Explorers were able to hold on for a 25-20 first-set win, despite the 'Cats keeping things close.
The two squads traded blows to start the second, as kills from Rau and McNeight kept things even at 7-7 in the early going. After more back-and-forth, Davidson took charge with an 8-1 spurt on a lengthy Kylie Bishopp service run that featured a flurry of Rau finishers. Though the Explorers threatened, the Wildcats closed things out in the frame to win it, 25-18, to even the match at 1-1.
The Explorers rallied, however, to take the third frame, thanks in part to a .424 hitting percentage. Kuhlmeier contributed six kills in the frame with Hannah McGary chipping in four.
It was all La Salle in the fourth as the Explorers opened a 10-5 advantage. Davidson battled back to even the score at 14, but the Explores found an answer and registered match point, 25-19 on a Felton kill.
The Wildcats continue their homestand next weekend as they welcome George Washington, Friday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. and George Mason, Sunday Oct. 19 at 1 p.m.
