LEXINGTON, Va. – Scott Patrick's win by tech. fall at 197-pounds gave Davidson a 20-17 lead with one bout left, but Davidson was unable to overcome a 50-pound disadvantage at heavweight and were edged by the VMI Keydets, 21-20, in SoCon wrestling action Friday evening at the Thunderdome.
The Wildcats (4-7, 0-2 SoCon) came close to picking up their first SoCon win of the season, winning five of the bouts.
With the Keydets leading 6-0, Anthony Elias won a 9-2 decision over VMI's Michael Flora at 133 pounds, though VMI would add to the lead with a major decision at 141. Kevin Birmingham's pin streak ended at six, but he rolled to his seventh straight win with a 9-7 sudden victory over Shabaka Johns at 149-pounds.
With the score at 10-6 in their favor, the Keydets won by decision at 157 and major decision at 165 to push their lead to 17-6.
However, the Wildcats would take three straight to come from behind. Nathaniel Powers won by fall over Derek Thurman at 174, earning the Wildcats' lone pin of the evening in 1:56. In just his second bout of the season, Ian Solcz defeated Hardy Hendren 3-1 in sudden victory at 184-pounds. Wrestling up at 197, Scott Patrick won at the seven-minute mark by tech. fall, 22-4, over Andrew Embree to put the 'Cats in front, 20-17.
With VMI's Juan Adams weighing in at just over 283 pounds, it was too much for the 231-pound Isola to overcome. Adams earned the 14-2 major decision to just barely pus the Keydets in front of the Wildcats for the 21-20 victory.
Davidson will return to Belk Arena Sunday afternoon to host SoCon foe The Citadel at 1 p.m. followed by a dual with Franklin & Marshall.
