DAVIDSON, N.C. — After an outstanding week, sophomore Dakota Dukes was awarded the Southern Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for games from Jan. 7-14, as announced by the league office today.
Dukes earned Davidson's third player of the week award after Laura Murray had won the award, Dec. 3 & 10. Shannon Eriksson was named the SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week, Jan. 8.
Named to the All-SoCon Freshman Team last year, Dukes had a monster week averaging a double-double on the strength of 20 points and 10 rebounds in leading Davidson to a 2-0 week with a pair of league wins vs. Elon (W, 67-62) and UNCG (78-59).
The forward shot a blistering 78.9 percent (15-19) and drained 10-of-12 free-throw attempts, while pocketing six steals.
In Saturday's win vs. Elon, Dukes was near perfect by going 6-for-7 from the floor and 4-of-6 at the line, scoring 16 points and hauling in 10 rebounds. She followed that up with a 24-point, 10-rebound performance in Monday's victory against UNCG. Dukes hit 9-of-12 shots and swished home all six of her free throws. She also came up with four of Davidson's season-high 18 steals.
A native of Raleigh, N.C., Dukes pushed her double-double total on the year to six, which are the first six of her young career. She ranks second in the league in double-doubles and has scored in double figures 12 times this season.
On the year, Dukes is third on the team in scoring (13.7 / 7th in SoCon), and first in rebounding (7.9 / 10th) and field goal percentage (.526 / 5th).
The Wildcats look to keep the winning going as it hits the road for a single game over the weekend with a trip to Statesboro, Ga., to face Georgia Southern Saturday, Jan. 18 at 5 p.m.
