DAVIDSON, N.C. — Seven Wildcats got the Davidson women's tennis team's 2013 Fall season underway as they took part in Davidson's own Invitational with Gardner-Webb, East Carolina and Campbell joining Friday and Saturday at the Covington Tennis Courts.
Campbell took home five of the seven singles flight titles, while ECU took home all four doubles flights with Davidson and Campbell tying the Pirates in a three-way tie at No. 1 doubles.
Though the 'Cats did not win a singles flight, the freshman duo of Sarah Stein and Jenna Brunner had a great showing in their Fall debuts. They each went 2-1 at the No. 4 and 5 singles flights, respectively. Stein rattled off 7-5, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-2 wins against Campbell and Gardner-Webb. Her lone defeat was a super-tie breaker loss after splitting with ECU's Emily Groeneveld 7-5, 3-6 in the first two sets.
Brunner had wins of 6-2, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5 singles vs. Gardner-Webb and East Carolina.
Brites Moniz-Soares, Nisha Crouser and Laina Cummer each picked a win in their respective singles flights. The senior pair of Moniz-Soares and Crouser had 6-1, 6-3 and 6-3, 7-6 victories against their Gardner-Webb opponents at No. 1 and 3 singles.
Cummer, who played at the No. 2 singles flight, earned a 6-3, 6-3 triumph against Jenny Lunde of the Runnin Bulldogs. She nearly had another win, forcing a super tie-breaker against her Campbell opponent, but fell 13-11. She had won the second set, 6-4, after dropping a 6-3 decision in the first set.
In doubles action, the No. 1 Wildcat team of Moniz-Soares and Cummer had a pair of wins, 8-5 and 8-3 to tie for first place in the flight.
At No. 2, Crouser and Stein earned an 8-5 victory against Gardner-Webb.
Davidson heads to Charleston, S.C., Sept. 20-22, for the College of Charleston Invitational.
