
Wildcats Cap SMU Invite with 3-0 Sweep of Grambling State

DALLAS, Texas – Hitting a season-high .325 as a team, the Davidson volleyball team wrapped up play at the SMU Invitational with a 3-0 sweep of Grambling State at the Dedman Center Saturday afternoon to leave Dallas with a 2-1 tournament record and 5-1 overall mark. The 'Cats took the match in set scores of 25-12, 25-4 and 25-11.
Davidson is off to its best start since the 2002 season, when they Wildcats went 7-1 through the first eight games of the season.
Caroline Brown had a career-high six aces and a team-leading 11 digs as 14 different players made their way into the rotation. Brown also put away six kills, while Tindall Sewell and Hannah Rau each had eight to lead the way for Davidson. The Wildcats finished with 37 kills and 7.0 team blocks.
Mikayla Derochie and Gaylen Fronk split time at setter, recording 19 and 10 assists, respectively. Six different players had served up aces in the match, with Rau putting down a pair. Defensively, Sewell posted four blocks to go along with Michelle McNeight's four, while Anastasia Owen grabbed six digs.
Tiara McIver had four kills to lead the Tigers (1-6), while Kayla Lewis picked up nine digs.
The Wildcats raced out to a 12-5 lead after Brown served five straight points, including a trio of aces. Rau added three kills, with Taylor Pisel chipping in a pair as well before two GSU miscues gave Davidson the 25-12 set one victory.
Rau served seven straight points, including a pair of aces, as the 'Cats took another early lead in set two, going up 9-1. Davidson continued to pour it on, finding themselves with a 22-4 advantage. Three straight aces from Brown then closed out the set for the 25-4 win as the 'Cats went up 2-0 in the match.
In set three it was Layne Doctson's turn to serve up five straight points as the Wildcats took a 6-0 lead. A block from Sewell and McNeight capped a short 4-0 run later in the set as Davidson took a ten-point lead at 19-9. Another 4-0 run would end the set on a Tiger error as the 'Cats claimed set three 25-11 for the 3-0 match win.
Davidson heads to the Georgia State Invitational in Atlanta, Ga., next weekend. They will begin play with a 5 p.m. match vs. Buffalo Friday evening.
