DAVIDSON, N.C. – A return trip to the Total Performance Invite, a clash with a former league rival and the final season of competition at the CCSA Duals are some of the highlights on the swimming & diving schedule for the 2013-14 season, as announced by head coach John Young Thursday.
"For our last season in the CCSA, we are excited to face a good amount of conference competition, while also perpetuating some of our favorite rivalry meets," said Young. "This schedule offers us a number of benchmark competitions, and offers the Davidson community some exciting competitions at which we hope to see a lot of support at Cannon Pool."
The Wildcats once again start the season off in Greensboro at the North Carolina College Kick Off, held Oct. 4 and 5. Select events start at 5:30 Friday evening, with the bulk of the action starting at 10 a.m. the following morning.
Back at Cannon Pool, both squads will face East Carolina in a 1 p.m. dual meet, Oct. 12. Both teams fell to the Pirates in Greenville, N.C., last season despite wins from Kaliya Burton-Akright (one-meter diving) and Meredith Nakano (200-yard breaststroke).
Davidson then treks to Charleston, S.C., Oct. 19 to face one-time league foe College of Charleston. Diving will start at 11:30 a.m. and will be followed by the swimming events at 2 p.m. Last year, the 'Cats won by scores of 163.5-130.5 (men) and 152-148 (women) over the Cougars, who are now in the CAA.
"We're excited to continue our series with the College of Charleston, especially since we'll no longer see them at our championship," said Young. "The men haven't won in three trips to Charleston, and both teams will be excited for the meet."
Making their way back to Davidson, the Wildcats will host current CCSA foes VMI and UNC Asheville (women) in a 1 p.m. meet, Nov. 2. Both the men and the women downed the Keydets last season, winning by scores of 164-118 and 150-71, respectively. This will be the Wildcats' first opportunity to take on the Bulldogs in head to head action, as they are in just their third season back after a 36-year hiatus.
The following weekend, Davidson heads down to the south side of Charlotte for a meet at Queens University Saturday, Nov. 9, where the Campbell women will also be in attendance. The men's squad fell to the Royals 163-121, while the women earned a 183-108 victory last season. The Wildcats and the Camels last met in the regular season at the 2011 CCSA Duals, where the 'Cats grabbed a 222-66 win.
At the beginning of December, the Wildcats will make their annual trip to Ohio for the Total Performance Invitational, hosted by Kenyon College in Gambier. The meet begins at 6 p.m. Thursday Dec. 5, and follows a trial-and-finals format that begins at 9:30 a.m. both Friday and Saturday. More than one program record has been set at the highly competitive meet, which the 'Cats have been attending since the 2007-08 season.
Following a short holiday break, Davidson will travel to Williamsburg, Va., January 11 for a 1 p.m. dual meet at William & Mary. A week later, they return to host Gardner-Webb in a CCSA meet at Cannon Pool in another 1 p.m. dual meet. Both teams fell last season in Boiling Springs, N.C., though the divers did not compete.
"I'm thrilled to have the College of William and Mary back on the schedule," said Young. "That meet, on the heels of our training camp, will be a big test for the team. The Tribe is a program on the rise and if we enjoy racing a team of their caliber at that place in our season, the coaches will know that our championship preparations are on track."
The grand finale of the CCSA Duals will be held at Cannon Pool Feb.1, and is slated for a 1 p.m. start. The Howard men's and women's teams, along with the Georgia Southern and Liberty women's team will travel to Davidson for the non-traditional meet that pits every team against each other in head-to-head action to wrap up the regular season.
Soon after, the Wildcats will head to Knoxville, Tenn., for their final appearance at the CCSA Championship meet Feb. 20-22. The event, at which the men are the defending champions, will start at 10 a.m. Thursday and wrap up Saturday evening, following a trials and finals format.
Those who qualify will continue on in postseason meets. The NCAA Zone Diving championships are still to be determined, while the women's NCAA National Championship Meet is slated for March 20-22 in Minneapolis, Minn. The men's NCAA National Championship Meet will follow March 27-29 in Austin, Texas.
