ROCK HILL, S.C. – A pair of top-15 finishes propelled the Davidson women's cross country team to a third-place finish overall at the 27th Annual Winthrop/Adidas Invitational Saturday afternoon in Rock Hill.
The Wildcats were the runner up with 69 total points on the day, following winner Appalachian State (19). The 'Cats finished ahead of Winthrop (third place, 95 points) and SoCon foes Wofford (fourth place, 100 points) and Western Carolina (fifth, 134 points).
Erin Osment and Jenny Fritz were the Wildcats top finishers at just their second meet of the season. Osment continues to lead for the 'Cats, taking seventh overall in a time of 18:20.36. Fritz was close behind, finishing 11th in 18:29.78.
Caroline Turner, Manya Swick and Hayden Bates took 20th, 21st and 22nd, respectively, for the Wildcats. Turner crossed the line in 19:05.69 with Swick following in 19:10.18. Bates finished the course in 19:10.96.
In 27th was Hannah Rieden claimed 27th for Davidson, crossing the finishing line in 19:21.45. Teammate Brigid Behrens was two spots behind, taking 29th with a mark of 19:28.00. Sarah Paddon was 32nd overall, claiming a time of 19:39.59 while Ashlyn Gruber finished in 19:45.67 for 34th place.
Olivia Menden grabbed 38th place, finishing the course in 19:57.26 and was immediately followed by Rachel McKay in 39th at 19:57.57. Kate Kostecky completed the event in 20:10.53 for 41st place, while Ali Cobb came in 49th in a time of 20:46.35.
Following Cobb was Grace Watt, who finished 50th in 20:48.26. Freshman Morgan McGrath took 52nd at the meet in 20:49.96, followed by Lauren Carter in 54th with a time of 21:03.97.
"I was great to get a second place finish and some top-15 individual finishes, as well as beat out some SoCon teams," said head coach Jen Straub. "We ran collectively faster than a year ago so another solid effort. Our freshman once again stepped it up and were our second, third and fifth finishers. I'm very happy with out early season progress."
Davidson will head to McAlpine Park on Friday for the Charlotte Cross Country Invitational, hosted by the Charlotte 49ers.
