DAVIDSON, N.C. – For the second straight contest, Davidson rallied from an early deficit as the Wildcats struck three times in the second half to defeat Campbell, 3-2, in non-conference men's soccer action Wednesday evening at Alumni Stadium.
Ranked 10th in the latest NCSAA/Continental Tire South Region Poll, Davidson improves to 3-0-1, while the Camels fall to 1-2-0 on the young season.
Valeriy Sviderskiy, who led the Wildcats with four goals a year ago, scored the game-winner with just under 13 minutes to play when he beat his defender down the far sideline, which set up his one-on-one opportunity with Campbell's goalkeeper Ethan Hall. Ryan Malden assisted on the sophomore's second career difference maker.
After threatening with a pair of chances in the 10th minute, Campbell grabbed the early lead at the 17:08 mark when Justin Franz caught the Wildcats' sophomore keeper Andrew Kenneson off his line and struck a shot from midfield. Ricki Gaez provided the assist on his fellow midfielder's second goal of the season.
Less than nine minutes into the second half, Davidson drew level when John Pace ripped a left-footed blast from just outside the 18-yard box that beat Hall to his right.
Not long after Gaez pushed the Camels back in front with a 59th minute strike, Alec Rotunda evened the score, 2-2, when Christian Fechter centered a ball to Luke Blades, who headed it across for the equalizer.
Campbell held a 16-15 edge in shots, while Kenneson led both keepers with four saves en route to his first collegiate victory in goal.
Davidson returns to the pitch Saturday when it travels to Longwood for a 3 p.m. contest.
