DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson will begin its 2013 men's soccer campaign Friday with a 7 p.m. contest against Navy at Alumni Stadium before wrapping up the opening weekend Sunday when Marshall visits 1992 Team Field for a 7 p.m. start.
"We can't wait to kick off the 2013 regular season with two exciting matches," said head coach Matt Spear, who is entering his 13th season at the helm of his alma mater. "The guys have worked hard to prepare and it's time to step up and measure our abilities in real match play."
Davidson is unbeaten in its last 14 regular season openers, including a 9-0-3 mark under the direction of the former South Region Coach of the Year.
The Wildcats, who haven't dropped their first game of the season since 1998, are 32-20-5 all-time in openers.
"Games always demand and highlight an extra level of focus, urgency, cohesion and poise. We look forward to great crowd support, led by our student body, to spark an electric atmosphere for fans, families, alumni and guests."
Davidson returns eight starters from last year's team, including sophomore goalkeeper Matt Pacifici, who ranked second among league leaders in saves and saves per game a year ago.
Navy, which defeated Penn State in an exhibition contest last weekend, finished the 2012 season with a 7-7-3 overall record.
"Coach Dave Brandt won national championships before beginning his tenure at Navy, and I am certain his preparations are excellent. We want to also honor the importance of Navy in our national pride. Their student-athletes should be commended for their service," commented Spear.
Davidson is 1-0-1 all-time against the Mids, while owning a 14-7-1 mark against former SoCon member Marshall.
In addition to 14 newcomers, the Herd welcomes back just 14 letterwinners from their 2012 squad that posted an 11-5-1 mark. Marshall began 10-1-1 a year ago before losing four of its last five contests.
"Marshall is a good program from an excellent Conference USA. Coach Bob Grey is one of the winningest coaches in NCAA Soccer history. Last year they had just about the best record in the nation before fading a bit late."
Following a week break, the Wildcats will travel to Harvard for a 2 p.m. contest Sunday, September 8.
