SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Davidson women's cross country team has been selected to finish in sixth place in the Southern Conference this season, according to the 2013 preseason poll released by the league Wednesday.
Last year's runner up, Elon, was slated to finish first with a total of 93 points and five first place votes. They were followed by Furman's 86 points and four first place votes, while Samford rounded out the top three with a total of 79 points. See below for the full results of the poll.
The poll is voted on by the head coaches in the conference.
Davidson garnered 58 points, finishing three points behind fifth-place UNCG for predicted finish at this season's championships. The meet will be held Nov. 2 in Birmingham, Ala.
"We're still very young this season," said head coach Jen Straub. "A lot of our top returners are still underclassmen. I know we have the talent, so I'm excited to see what we can do this season."
The Wildcats finished fifth at the 2012 SoCon meet in Daniel Island, S.C. Though they lost all-second team member Natalie Atabek to graduation, all-freshman team honoree Olivia Menden returns for her sophomore season. She is joined by rising junior Sarah Paddon, who is back at full strength after earning freshman of the year honors in 2011, and Presley Parkes, who finished inside the top-20 at last season's meet.
Davidson heads to the USC Upstate Eye Opener in Spartanburg, S.C., to open the season Sept. 6.
