DAVIDSON, N.C. – Tindall Sewell and Caroline Brown earned preseason all-conference honors as the Davidson volleyball team was tabbed to finish seventh in the Southern Conference as voted by the league's coaches Monday.
Davidson accumulated 47 points in earning its seventh-place ranking.
Samford, who fell in the semifinals to eventual champion College of Charleston, was selected first with 95 points and six first-place votes. The Bulldogs were followed by Georgia Southern with 89 points and a pair of first-place votes, while Furman took third with 79 points and one first place vote. UNCG was selected fourth with 67 points and a pair of first place votes, followed by Chattanooga in fifth (63 points), Elon in sixth (60 points). Appalachian State (eighth place, 44 points) Western Carolina (ninth pace, 26 votes), Wofford (10th place, 25 points) and The Citadel (11th place, 10 points) rounded out the poll.
"The conference rankings are about what we thought they'd be based on last year's finish and player changes throughout the league," said head coach Chris Willis, who enters his third season at the helm of the Wildcats. "Our goal is to be playing in the finals November 25."
Brown, an outside hitter, earns her second consecutive preseason nod after earning a spot on the all-conference second team in 2012. She led the squad in kills with 3.57 per set last season with 19 double-doubles. Brown is joined on this year's preseason team by middle hitter Sewell, who was the 'Cats' top attacker in both 2011 and 2012. As a junior, Sewell hit .320 on the season and ranked second with 2.76 kills per set. Prior to that, she led the NCAA with an attacking percentage of .430 in 2011.
"We're proud that Caroline and Tindall were acknowledged for preseason honors," said Willis. "They've both put together great seasons the last two years and this is recognition of that hard work."
The Wildcats, who went 11-16 overall and 7-9 in the SoCon last season, finished fourth in the Southern division before falling to No. 1N Samford in the SoCon Tournament quarterfinals. The 'Cats open the 2013 season with the Wildcat Classic Aug. 30-31 at Belk Arena in Davidson.
