PINEHURST, N.C. – Highlighted by six birdies, including four on his opening nine, Davidson's Richard Fountain is tied for fifth place following a four-under 67 in the opening round of the 113th Men's North & South Amateur Championship Tuesday at Pinehurst Country Club.
"The greens were just in absolutely perfect shape," Fountain said. "Anything you put on the right line, it was going in. I could see the line on my ball just rolling end-over-end. They were perfect."
A native of Raleigh, N.C., Fountain is just two strokes off the lead, which is currently held by Corey Conners.
Fountain, who recently competed in his second NCAA Regional in three years, finished his junior campaign at Davidson with a 73.8 stroke average, eight sub-par rounds, three top-five finishes and six Top-10s.
A two-time all-conference selection, Fountain captured the 2011 Southern Conference individual title as a freshman.
Davidson's David Sargent and Todd Eckstein are also competing in the annual event. Sargent opened with a 75, while Eckstein recorded a 78.
Live Scoring is available each day on the Tournament Website.
