A quartet of early tournaments, including the annual Wildcat Classic, will kick off a competitive 2013 schedule for the Davidson volleyball team as announced by head coach Chris Willis on Wednesday.
After opening the season at home in August, the squad will travel to Texas, Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee before wrapping things up with the 2013 Southern Conference Championships in Greenville, S.C., in November.
"The 2013 schedule gives us great elements of balanced competition, fair travel and good preparation for conference success," said Willis, who enters his third season at the helm of the Wildcats. "We're once again excited about the teams in our Wildcat Classic to open the season, then it's off to Dallas (SMU), Atlanta (Georgia State), and High Point. The preseason tournaments will give us a balance of challenging matches and opportunities for success. "
After prepping with the team's Alumni Match on Aug. 17, the Wildcats will host Cal State Bakersfield, Charleston Southern and cross-town rival Charlotte to open the season with the Wildcat Classic at Belk Arena the final weekend of August. The 'Cats will kick things off with a Friday evening match vs. the 49ers(Aug. 30) before taking on the Roadrunners and the Buccaneers on Saturday afternoon (Aug. 31).
Davidson will head to Dallas, Texas, in the first week of September to participate in the SMU Invitational. They will square off with Sam Houston State and host Southern Methodist Sept. 6 prior to wrapping play up with a tilt vs. Grambling State Sept. 7.
The 'Cats hit the road again a week later, trekking to Atlanta, Ga., for the Georgia State Invitational. A match vs. Central Florida is set for Friday evening (Sept. 13) followed by a pair of Saturday (Sept. 14) contests against the host Bulldogs and the University at Buffalo.
The High Point Invitational will mark the fourth and final regular season tournament for the Wildcats, who will head to nearby High Point, N.C, for the event. The squad opens with a Friday (Sept. 20) evening contest vs. Murray State and will continue the action on Saturday (Sept. 21) with match ups against North Carolina A&T and the host Panthers.
"Our SoCon matches have a great flow for us with no back-to-back road trips," said Willis. "Overall, the 2013 season gives us great opportunities to put our talents to the test. We're all looking forward to an exciting few months of competition."
A final season of Southern Conference play commences Sept. 27 when the 'Cats make their way to Boone, N.C. to take on rival Appalachian State before heading over to Cullowhee, N.C, to face Western Carolina Sept. 28. They return to Belk Area for a three-game home stand to kick off October, hosting Winthrop in a nonconference match on the first of the month. Davidson then welcomes Elon (Oct. 4) and UNCG (Oct. 5) for a pair of league games before heading to Boiling Springs, N.C., Oct. 8 for a nonconference tilt with Gardner-Webb.
Samford (Oct. 12) and Chattanooga (Oct. 13) come to Davidson to continue league play before the Wildcats travel to South Carolina to face Furman (Oct. 18) and Wofford (Oct. 19) in Greenville and Spartanburg, respectively.
Their second meeting with the WCU Catamounts comes at home on Oct. 25 and is followed by another meeting with in-state foe Appalachian State Oct. 26. The Wildcats then embark on the farthest remaining road trip, traveling to Birmingham, Ala., to square off against Samford for the second time Nov. 2 before heading to Chattanooga, Tenn., to meet the Mocs once again Nov. 3.
The Wildcats will wrap up the home portion of their slate in mid-November. They welcome The Citadel Bulldogs to North Carolina for the lone meeting of the regular season between the two teams Nov. 8, before facing Georgia Southern for the first and only time in the regular season Nov. 9.
