DAVIDSON, N.C. — Third-year head coach Michele Savage and the Davidson women's basketball team recently held their annual end of the year banquet at the Nancy Blackwell House on the campus of Davidson College.
The Wildcats honored their five seniors Sophia Aleksandravicius, Barbara Sitton, Jasmine Calin, Katrin Chiemeka and Sarah Davis, while handing out three team awards. Aleksandravicius was awarded the team's MVP and H.E.A.R.T. Award, while junior Laura Murray was given the Wildcat Award.
The pair of Aleksandravicius and Murray led Davidson to a very successful 2012-13 season. Among some of the highlights this season were the Wildcats finished second in the Southern Conference, reached the conference tournament championship game for the second time in program history and collected their first postseason win. Making its second straight postseason appearance, and third overall, with a trip to Women's NIT, Davidson scored the program's first postseason victory at Old Dominion, 82-73, in the first round.
Leading the charge all season was Aleksandravicius and Murray. The senior Aleksandravicius had a season for the record books as she capped off her historical four-year career by setting seven all-time school records, including points (1,878), rebounds (1,143) and blocks (339). In addition, she set six new single-season Wildcat records along the way.
Aleksandravicius, a Full Court Mid-Major All-America Honorable Mention, was tabbed the SoCon Player and Defender of the Year for the second season in a row, while earning All-SoCon First Team honors on both the media and coaches team. The 6-5 forward became the first player in program history to be picked for the first team three straight years on both teams as well as the first player to win the league's top honor twice.
Aleksandravicius was a five-time SoCon Player of the Week and four-time player of the month during her career. She led the SoCon in scoring (16.5), rebounding (9.9) and blocks (102- 2.9 per game) this past year, while ranking 10th in the nation in blocks and 11th in double-doubles with a career-high 20.
The junior sharp-shooter Murray finished second on the team in scoring at 12.6 points. She was named to the coaches all-conference team for the second year in a row, while garnering All-SoCon Second Team honors. After helping guide the 'Cats to the SoCon finals, Murray was named to the SoCon All-Tournament First Team. The junior averaged 19 points and hit 47 percent of her shots from downtown in Davidson's three games.
The former SoCon Freshman of the Year became the 16th Wildcat in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau, going over the mark in the first half vs. Chattanooga at home, Jan. 18. Murray currently sits sixth all-time in points (1,263) and her 160 career three-pointers are good for fourth-most.
Sitton leaves with her name in the record books. She finished second all-time in assists (469) and steals, pocketing 270 during her career. The Wildcats' starting point guard's career-best 148 dimes this year were third-most in a single-season. She ranked second in the league with an average of 4.2 per game.
Davidson's season came to an end in the second round of the WNIT, falling to cross-county rival Charlotte. The 'Cats finished 22-13 overall and 16-4 in SoCon action. The 22 wins were second-most and gave them back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time.
