DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. – Led by top-five showings from Todd Eckstein and Richard Fountain, Davidson recorded its highest finish at the Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship in 40 years, placing second just two strokes behind No. 48 Chattanooga Tuesday afternoon at the Ralston Creek Course.
The Wildcats, who held the top spot on the team leaderboard after round one, posted an 886 (297-294-295) to come home runner-up for the first time since the 1973 campaign. Davidson's five conference titles came between 1954-68.
Davidson, which also finished with its lowest 54-hole SoCon total in school history, trailed by eight strokes after 12 holes before playing the closing six in two-under as a team. Eckstein had a 15-foot birdie putt on the final hole that would have forced both an individual and team playoff.
Eckstein (71-74-72), who was tied for the lead with U.S. Amateur Champion Steven Fox (UTC) and Josh Lorenzetti (CofC) after 15, bogeyed the last to finish with a three-day total of 217 (+1). Fox also suffered a bogey six on the 18th hole, while Lorenzetti finished birdie, par to capture the individual championship by two strokes.
Aiming for his second individual title in the last three years, Fountain (75-72-72) shot even-par 72 for the second consecutive day to finish alone in fifth at 219 (+3). Fountain, who finished with nine birdies and an eagle over three days, became just the second Wildcat (Sollie Foy, 1978-79) to earn multiple all-conference honors.
Both Eckstein and Fountain were voted to the SoCon All-Tournament team.
After making the turn at three-over for the day, freshman David Sargent (+16/T-30th) played the back nine in one-under, including a birdie on the last to post a two-over 74.
A day after carding a one-under 71, 2012 all-conference performer John Skeadas III capped his collegiate career with a 77 to place tied for 12th out of 55 competitors.
Samuel Echikson (74-77-82 = 233), who led the Wildcats in stroke average entering the event, joined Fountain on the all-conference squad.
College of Charleston placed third in its final SoCon appearance, while Appalachian State finished fourth ahead of Georgia Southern and UNCG.
The 77th edition of the league championship was played on the Par 72, 7,446-yard Rees Jones layout.
Davidson, which enjoyed one of its most successful seasons in school history, finishes the year with two team titles, six top-five finishes and nine Top-10s.
