DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. -- Highlighted by three players in the Top-10, including second-place Todd Eckstein (+1), the Davidson men's golf team will enter Tuesday's final round of the 2013 Southern Conference Championship just three strokes behind nationally-ranked and defending champion Chattanooga.
The Wildcats, who held the overnight lead, could not have asked for a better start recording 10 birdies on their opening nine and making the turn at four-under as a team. Davidson (297-294 = 591), which bettered its opening round score by three strokes, is currently nine ahead of third-place College of Charleston (309-291=600)
Eckstein (71-74) who sat atop the individual leaderboard following Sunday's only red number, birdied three of his first six holes to move to four-under overall. The sophomore dropped a few strokes down the stretch, but is only two behind clubhouse leader Steven Fox (-1) of UTC.
Looking to win the individual crown for the second time in three years, Davidson's Richard Fountain (75-72) is just four strokes off the pace in a tie for fourth after posting an even-par 72. The 2011 champion got to two-under on the day with an eagle on the par-5 11th before a double bogey on the next hole.
After shooting a five-over 77 in yesterday's opening round, senior John Skeadas III (77-71) bounced back with his third sub-par round of the year to move into a tie for sixth, five back.
Samuel Echikson (74-77) will enter the final 18 holes in a tie for 15th place following a five-over 77. Also competing for Davidson is David Sargent, who shot a 78 Monday and is currently tied for 38th out of 55 competitors.
The 77th edition of the league championship is being played on the Par 72, 7,446-yard Ralston Course / Rees Jones layout.
Tomorrow's third and final round will begin at 9 a.m. Paired with Chattanooga and College of Charleston, the Wildcats will be led off the opening tee by Sargent (9:50 a.m.), Echikson (10:00 a.m.), Skeadas (10:10 a.m.), Fountain (10:20 a.m.) and Eckstein (10:30 a.m.).
