DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. – In addition to Todd Eckstein firing a season-low one-under 71 to grab the individual lead, Davidson carded a 297 and holds the top spot on the team leaderboard following day one of the 2013 Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship at the Ralston Creek Course.
Battling very windy conditions, the Wildcats played their final nine holes in one-over par and will enter day two of the 54-hole event with a one-stroke lead over nationally-ranked and defending champion Chattanooga (298).
After closing his outward nine with three consecutive bogeys, Eckstein responded with four birdies on the back nine to post the day's only sub-par round. A native of Durham, Eckstein leads 2012 U.S. Amateur Champion Steven Fox (UTC) and Taylor Coalson (UNCG) by one.
Like Eckstein, Samuel Echikson played his final nine holes under par and will enter day two in a tie for fifth following a two-over 74.
Richard Fountain, who won the 2011 SoCon individual title as a freshman, finished his opening round with three birdies, but also suffered a pair of double bogeys to shoot 75.
Also competing for the Wildcats are John Skeadas III (T-13th) and David Sargent (T-28th), who shot 77 and 80, respectively.
The 77th edition of the league championship is being played on the Par 72, 7,446-yard Rees Jones layout.
Tomorrow's second round will begin at 8 a.m.
