2013 Davidson Men’s Soccer Spring Recap

The Davidson men's soccer team concluded their 2013 spring training over the weekend at the Manchester Cup in Rock Hill, S.C.
Highlighted by a 2-1 come-from-behind win over South Carolina on the final day of the season, the Wildcats concluded their spring training matches with a 4-3-2 record, which also included victories over High Point, West Virginia Wesleyan and Young Alumni.
After their fourth straight win over the Gamecocks, Davidson suffered a hard-fought 1-0 setback to the Clemson Tigers, who the Wildcats played to a 0-0 tie in the 2012 regular season opener at Alumni Stadium.
“Concluding the spring season against two quality opponents was ideal,” said head coach Matt Spear. “Our players competed hard and were very close to securing two big wins against talented squads. But the guys said after the tough loss to Clemson that they wanted to use it as fuel to get better, and to topple these kinds of teams next fall.”
Davidson also played College of Charleston and Winthrop to draws, while falling to James Madison and USL Pro Eagles and Clemson.
“The schedule was deliberately challenging. It was set up with a pair of three-game date sets. We played on a weekend, mid-week, then the following weekend – similar to how the fall season runs. Included were two fairly long bus trips – to JMU and College of Charleston – so the team gets the experience of playing on a road trip.
“On three of the game dates we faced two opponents and two of the one-game dates had extra time – so the guys fitness and depth were further tested too. Overall the coaches are pleased with the players' development and performances.”
