LEADING OFF
- Davidson played 11 of its last 12 games on the road and is now returning home for seven straight. The last five games were against non-conference opponents as Davidson had a weekend off from SoCon play. Davidson is 9-8 as the home team this season but 0-14 on the road. The Wildcats have one win in their last 14 games.
- The Wildcats will be looking to snap a four-game skid against College of Charleston and claim its first series over the Cougars since 2001. This will be the final Southern Conference series between the teams, as CofC is departing for the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) following this season.
THE SERIES
VS. COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON: Davidson trails in the all-time series, 12-32. The Wildcats claimed one win against the then-No. 21 Cougars in 2011, but were swept last season and have lost the last 11 series.
SCOUTING COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON
CofC ranks third in the SoCon with a 9-5 record and sits at 18-14 overall, and leads it with a 3.81 team ERA. The Cougars lost a 14 inning game at Coastal Carolina in their most outing Wednesday, but took 2-of-3 from UNCG in their last conference series. Earlier in the season CofC also took 2-of-3 from Elon and swept Samford, but split a series with Appalachian State and, like Davidson, only was able to get one win against Western Carolina. Ben Boykin leads the team with a .330 batting average and three home runs. Brandon Murray also has three home runs and is batting .319 with 25 RBI. Gunnar Heidt leads in RBI with 28, and is batting .318 with two home runs.
NOTES
BAYOU BASH: The Wildcats will look to set an attendance record with the Davidson Baseball Bayou Bash during the UNCG game Friday, April 19. Free crawfish, corn, potatoes, and sausage will be available for the first 1,000 people, as the 'Cats will be trying to break a Wilson Field record by having more than 1,200 people at the game. One fan will win a free iPad and one will win free Coca-Cola for a year courtesy of Coca-Cola.
POWER SURGE: Davidson has already surpassed last year's home run total of 15 with 16 home runs this season. Andrew Barna had not hit a home run since April of his sophomore season, but the senior has already matched his career high of seven set as a freshman, which ranks him ninth in the SoCon and 30th in the nation. Barna also entered the week ranked third in the SoCon amongst active career leaders in RBI with 130.
BEND BUT DON'T BREAK: Davidson was the underdog entering it's 4/5 game vs. UNCW, as the Wildcats had lost their last 10 and the Seahawks were receiving Top 25 votes, but Davidson prevailed, 2-1. UNCW went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position, stranding 12 on the bases, as the 'Cats came up with key pitches and great defensive plays, escaping three bases-loaded jams.
LOSING STREAKS END: Davidson has lost its last seven meetings against UNCW and had lost all seven home contests with the Seahawks, but ended both droughts with a 2-1 victory (4/5). Dating back to 2009, Davidson had lost the last 11 games against Appalachian State, but finally prevailed on Mar. 2. With runners on second and third and one out in the bottom of the ninth, Sam Foy singled to shallow center to drive in Nathan Becker for the tying run, but the ball slipped past centerfielder Jaylin Davis, allowing pinch-runner Aaron Ruzinsky to score the winning run from second base.
BONUS BASEBALL: Davidson played its first extra inning game of the season Mar. 8, ultimately losing to Western Carolina, 9-4 in 13 innings. The 'Cats were 2-4 in extra innings in 2012, and had not played a game as long as 13 innings since 2003, a 7-6 win over UNCG (5/17). Davidson is 1-1 this season after a 10th inning victory over Furman at Fluor Field, 3/17.
CLUTCH FRESHMAN: Sam Foy has been the hero in both of Davidson's walk-off victories this season. He singled in the bottom of the ninth against Appalachian State (3/2) for a 4-3 win in the bottom of the ninth and doubled in the bottom of the 10th at Fluor Field for a 7-6 win over Furman (3/17).
