DAVIDSON, N.C. – Senior goalkeeper Jessica Melby (Pittsburgh, Pa.) earned her first accolade of the year by being named the Choice Hotels Big South Defensive Player of the Week for games played, March 25-31.
The senior, who is the second Wildcat to earn a weekly award this year joining Ann Fucigna (March 12), led the Wildcats to a pair of wins last week against Lafayette (17-13) and Liberty (12-5).
She finished the week with 15 saves, a 9.00 goals against average and three groundballs. Melby stopped nine of those shots in a home victory vs. Lafayette, holding the Leopards to just five second-half goals.
Melby then picked up her fifth win of the season between the pipes in a 12-5 Big South road victory at Liberty. The five goals allowed have been the fewest given up in Big South play thus far. The senior allowed just two of the goals in the second half and tallied all three of her groundballs for the week vs. the Flames.
On the season, Melby owns a 8.98 GAA (tops in the Big South), while stopping 70 shots in 10 games. Her 45.2 percent save percentage is third-best in the league.
In the Wildcat career record book, Melby ranks fifth all-time with 355 saves and her 2,736 minutes between the pipes is good for third-most among Wildcat goalkeepers.
Davidson (5-5, 2-0 Big South), winners of three straight, returns home for a three-game stand, starting April 5 at 6 p.m. against first-year program Campbell. It will close out the weekend against Presbyterian on Sunday, April 7 at 1 p.m.
