EUGENE, Ore. – In a back-and-forth contest that went down to the wire, the Vermont Catamounts scored three of the final four goals to overcome Davidson's early lead and take a 12-10 decision Wednesday afternoon on the campus of Oregon in a neutral site women's lacrosse match.
Davidson (1-2) let a 5-0 lead slip away as it fell to Vermont for the second straight season. The Catamounts (3-2) scored a 19-9 win last year in the series on the road.
Ann Fucigna paced the Wildcats with four goals, three of them coming in the first half, to push her season total to seven. Emma Sissman had three points on two goals and an assist. She added a team-best five draw controls.
Emily Cooke continued her torrid-scoring pace to start the year, netting a pair of goals and assisting on another. The sophomore has now registered team bests of seven goals and 11 assists.
Vermont's Sydney Mas tallied five points on four goals and an assist, while Jessica Roach had a goal and three assists for four points.
Down 9-7 after a Mas goal with 19:34 left in the second half, Cooke helped the Wildcats tie things up by assisting on a Sissman goal and then added one of her own two minutes later.
The Wildcats though saw the Catamounts push the lead back out to two, 11-9, with just over five minutes to play. Sissman converted on a free-postion attempt to make it 11-10, but Davidson failed to get any closer and Vermont tacked on one more for the final margin.
Fucigna just missed tying things up at 11-apiece when her shot went off the post with 4:07 on the clock. Then, down 12-10, the junior missed on a free-position shot with 1:36 remaining that would have cut the deficit to one.
Behind Fucigna's offensive output in the first half, the Wildcats had an early cushion through the first 13 minutes. The junior's third goal of the half made it 5-0 off an assist from Sissman with 16:47 on the clock.
Vermont found its offense, with three straight goals over the next three minutes to make it 5-3. Cooke's sixth goal and 16th point of the season would make it 6-3 with 11:22 left, before the Catamounts closed to within one, 6-5, before halftime.
Senior goalie Jessica Melby register 10 saves and a groundball. Both teams pulled in 12 groundballs each.
Davidson stays in Eugene, Ore., to face Oregon Friday evening at 8 p.m. The two teams met last year in Davidson with the Ducks earning an 8-4 win to move to 4-0 in the all-time series.
