STANFORD, Calif./ROCK HILL, S.C. – Davidson senior Demetrios Pagonis set a new school record in the 10,000-meter run late Friday night at the Stanford Invitational at Cobb Track and Angell Field. Other members of the Wildcats men's track and field team competed at the nearby Winthrop Invitational Friday.
Pagonis completed his sweep of the Wildcat distance record books by completing the 10K race in 29 minutes 32.58 seconds, which was good for fourth place in the second section of the event in a very competitive field. He breezed past the record set by Ryan Hopkins at the Penn Relays last year of 29:49.01 and his own personal best of 30:12.90, which he also ran at the Penn Relays.
Pagonis and middle-distance teammate Andrew Lantz will likely give the Wildcats two representatives at the NCAA Regional meet this year, as both have turned in performances amongst the fastest in the nation in their respective events.
The 'Cats also competed on Winthrop's Irwin Belk Track Friday. Stewart Dalton led Davidson with a sixth-place finish in the long jump, nearing his personal best with a leap of 22 feet, 5 ¼ inches (6.84m). Nate Faubion led the 'Cats in the 400-meter dash preliminaries in 51.52 seconds, but did not advance to the finals.
Competition at Winthrop will resume Saturday.
