DAVIDOSN, N.C. – Ann Fucigna scored a season-best five goals, including four of them in the second period when Davidson broke open a 10-all tie with a 7-3 run to close the game and take home a 17-13 win vs. Lafayette Tuesday evening at Richardson Stadium in women's lacrosse.
Davidson avenged a 14-8 defeat to the Leopards last year at Richardson, winning its second game in a row and scoring 17 goals for the second straight game to run its record to 4-5. Lafayette fell to an even 6-6.
Fucigna scored all four of her goals in a row with her third goal being the game-winner to help the Wildcats grab a 14-11 lead with less than 11 minutes remaining. She tacked on her final goal at the 8:04 mark to make 15-12 and push her season total to a team-best 26. The junior is nine goals away from breaking the Wildcats' all-time scoring mark.
Alanna Parker had her second straight four-goal game, scoring a pair in each half. Erin Doherty had a season-high three goals, while Emily Rademacher tied Parker with four points on two goals and two assists.
Rademacher and Emily Cooke (1 goal, 2 assists) broke up the 10-10 tie when they hooked up at the 21:21 mark of the second half to start the winning run.
Mary Leonard registered a season-best four points, getting a season-high three assists, including the last one of the game on Doherty's seventh goal of the season with 3:24 left to make it 17-13.
The Leopards were paced by Ana White's four goals, while Addie Godfrey, Laura Kleiber and Carlianne McCabe each scored twice. Jessica Rothstein had three points on a goal and two assists.
White single-handedly brought Lafayette back from a 5-1 deficit in the first half, scoring three of the Leopards' five goals in a 10-minute span that gave them a 6-5 lead with 2:53 remaining.
Both teams were firing on all cylinders in the last two and a half minutes, combining for five goals, three of them from Davidson, to go into the break knotted up at 8-apiece.
The 'Cats had a brief 10-8 lead after Parker's free-position goal in the early goings of the second half, but Lafayette scored back-to-back goals about a minute apart to even things up at 10.
Lafayette had a one-shot lead at 25-24 and picked up 19 groundballs to the Wildcats' 13. Davidson held an 18-15 edge on draw controls.
Emma Sissman picked up seven draw controls, while Paige Logan filled the stat-sheet with three draw controls, three groundballs and a caused turnover. Rebecca Garman and Abigail Doelger each picked up a pair of groundballs.
Senior Jessica Melby stopped seven shots between the pipes, including a couple big ones in the last four minutes when Lafayette was pushing to tying things up.
Davidson takes to the road for a Big South game at Liberty, March 30. Gametime is set for 3 p.m.
