CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Junior Andrew Lantz won the 800-meter run at the Charlotte 49rs Invitational in a school-record 1 minute, 50.25 seconds to lead Davidson men's track and field on Irwin Belk Track Saturday.

Lantz broke his own school record of 1:50.87, which he ran twice last season. He now owns the top three performances in the 800m in school history. Sophomore Wesley Laytham also earned a top-10 finish in the event, placing 10th in 1:54.86.

It was the second record to fall in the opening meet of the 2013 outdoor track season as senior Demetrios Pagonis won the 5000-meter run in 14:09.96 seconds Friday. Pagonis bested the record set just last season by Ryan Hopkins '12 at the Raleigh Relays. Pagonis' previous personal best was 14:17.27, which he accomplished in the same race.

Junior Michael Lorentsen turned in a Davidson all-time top-10 time performance in the pole vault, placing seventh after clearing 14 feet, 1 ¼ inches (4.30m).

Freshman Xzavier Killings placed himself amongst Davidson's all-time top-10 performers in both the high jump (6-2, 1.88m) and triple jump (44-6, 1.20m).

Davidson also entered teams in the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays placing 10th in 43.41 seconds and 13th in 3:30.00, respectively.

On Friday, Davidson also had several student-athletes compete in the sprints and hurdles preliminaries, but none were able to advance to the finals. Freshman Charles Rappe came the closest, placing just outside the top eight in the 400-meter hurdles in 56.71 seconds.

Sophomore Sal del Giudice led Davidson in the 1500-meter run, placing 15th in 3:58.78.

Davidson will next compete at the High Point VertKlasse Meeting Saturday.
