DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's basketball team will be making its second straight postseason appearance by earning an automatic berth into the 2013 Women's National Invitation Tournament, as they learned this week.
The Wildcats will be making their third-ever postseason appearance, all in the WNIT. They made their first appearance in 2006-07 and then earned an automatic berth after capturing the program's first SoCon regular season title a year ago.
They will learn of their matchup late Monday night, March 18, as the rest of the WNIT field will be completed. The Wildcats are one of nine teams who have already earned an automatic berth, joining Army, Eastern Illinois, Harvard, Iona, IUPUI, San Diego, UALR and Winthrop.
Davidson was hoping to make its first trip to the NCAA Tournament as it reached the SoCon final Monday, March 11, for the second time in school history. But, it suffered a heartbreaking last-second loss to Chattanooga, 64-63. The Wildcats saw the UTC score on its third offensive rebound on its last possession of the game with eight seconds left. The 'Cats had the last shot, but could not convert on their own last-second attempt as time expired.
Despite the tough defeat, it's been another strong campaign for Davidson. It will be entering the WNIT with its second straight 20-win season, sitting at 21-12 overall. The Wildcats' 16-4 SoCon mark was the second-best record in school history. They have won 17 of their last 22 games dating back to Jan. 20, which included rattling off a season-high six-game win streak.
Two-time SoCon Player of the Year Sophia Aleksandravicius paces the Wildcat offense. She is averaging a double-double, pouring in a team-best 16.1 points a game (2nd in SoCon) and hauling in 10 rebounds (tops in SoCon), while blocking a new personal-best and school-record 99 shots (ninth in the nation). The senior has collected 19 double-doubles on the year, giving her 49 for her career.
She is joined on offense by junior Laura Murray, a two-time All-SoCon First Team member. The junior is averaging 12.6 points and has a team-high 49 treys. Murray finished the SoCon Tournament scoring a season-high 25 points and 22 points, respectively, in the semifinals and finals vs. Elon and Chattanooga. Both Murray and Aleksandravicius were named the SoCon All-Tournament First Team.
Aleksandravicius' fellow classmates Barbara Sitton, Katrin Chiemeka and Sarah Davis will all be looking to extend their careers a few more games.
In last year's WNIT game, the Wildcats traveled to James Madison. They held a one-point advantage in the second half, but JMU used a 19-7 run midway through the half to take control and went on for 64-49 victory.
