Men First, Women Seventh after Day Two of CCSA Meet

ATHENS, Ga. – Drew Onken won his fourth consecutive 400 IM title and Dylan Ludwick notched his second individual victory of the meet as the Davidson swimming & diving teams finished the second day of action at the 2013 CCSA Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted at the University of Georgia's Gabrielson Natatorium.
The men's squad leads the way with 629.5 points, remaining ahead of second-place College of Charleston (567.5 points). The Wildcat women are seventh after two days of competition with 190 points. Florida Gulf Coast continues to lead with 544 points, followed by Liberty with 378.
Winning his second individual title of the meet, Onken finished the 400 individual medley in a time of 3:52.47 to meet his second NCAA “B” standard of the year. Teammate Grant Smith became just the second Wildcat in program history to break the 4:00 mark, dropping more than three seconds from his prelim time to take second in 3:57.64.
Ludwick came within a second of breaking the Davidson program record, swimming a 1:38.21 for the victory in the 200-yard freestyle. Ben Stewart-Bates also posted a career-best in the meet, touching the wall in 1:41.71 for sixth place.
Will Fox picked up an individual title in the 100-yard butterfly, posting a career-best 48.59 for the win. After swimming a personal best in the perlims Thomas Bigham swam a 50.58 in the finals for fifth in the event, while Cameron Bard took sixth place in a time of 50.81. Drew Gill marked the fourth Wildcat in the “A” final, taking eighth in 54.57.
Bigham and Spencer Gill picked up second and third, respectively, for the Wildcats in the 100-yard breaststroke. Bigham joined the program's all-time top-10 list in the prelims and clocked in at 57.67 in the finals, while Gill posted a career-best in the morning swim before finishing with a time of 57.69 in the finals. Drew Glenn swam a 59.53 for eighth place, while Drew Gill clocked in at 57.94 in the “B” final.
A trio of Wildcat also swam the “A” final in the 100-yard backstroke, led by Luke Burton's fourth place finish. Burton touched in 50.83, marking the third-best time in program history, while Brandon Kegley followed in fifth place with a time of 50.93. Ethan Levinson took sixth with a time of 51.20.
Brian McRae picked up a second-place finish for the 'Cats in the 1-meter diving, posting a score of 266.60.
Onken, Smith, Ludwick and Stewart-Bates finished off the session by setting a meet and conference record in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The four swam a 6:40.19 to set a new Davidson program record as well, marking the sixth straight season the 'Cats have claimed victory in the event. Earlier in the session, Levinson, Fox, Onken and Wills Cooper took home second in the 200-yard medley relay, swimming a time of 1:30.76.
The women's team started the session off with a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay as Kelsi Hobbs, Caroline Vrana, Jean DeOrnellas and Angie Healy combined for a 1:44.39. Healy would later help the 800-yard freestyle relay to a third place finish. She joined Meredith Nakano, Liz Mace and Jessica Miller for a time of 7:30.89 to tie the Davidson program record.
Freshman Emily Covert placed 14th in the 400-yard IM to start off the individual events. She swam a 4:32.94 after joining the all-time top-10 list in the prelims.
DeOrnellas picked up an eighth place finish in her first individual event of the evening, the 100-yard butterfly. She clocked in at 56.09 for a career best. Nakano just missed the A” final, taking ninth place in a time of 56.01 in the “B” section.
Healy swam one of the top times in program history in the 200-yard freestyle. She grabbed eighth place in a time of 1:52.28.
Nakano swam to an 11th place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, touching the pad in 1:04.57. Vrana also placed in the top 16, taking 15th in a time of 1:05.41.
The team will wrap things up on the third and final day of competition on Saturday. The morning session will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the finals at 6 p.m. Saturday evening.
