Men’s Soccer Announces 2013 Spring Slate

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The 2013 Davidson men's soccer spring schedule will feature nine contests, including dates against some of the top programs in the region and a pro team, as recently announced by head coach Matt Spear.
“Spring training is going very well so far,” commented Spear. “The guys have demonstrated great commitment and there is a stronger culture, chemistry, conviction and ambition growing in this group.”
Davidson will kick-off the campaign March 16 with a contest against West Virginia Wesleyan at 2 p.m before battling 12-time NCAA participant James Madison, which upset then-No. 2 North Carolina last season.
Following their trip to Harrisonburg, Va., the Wildcats will continue their eight-match slate with three straight at 1992 Team Field, beginning with the USL Pro Charlotte Eagles March 19. The Eagles compete in the tier just below Major League Soccer (MLS). Davidson assistant coach Eric Reed was their starting keeper and captain in 2012.
On March 24, Davidson will hold its annual Alumni contest at 1:30 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. match against High Point later that evening.
The Wildcats will travel to College of Charleston for an April 6 match against the Cougars, who will begin competition in the Colonial Athletic Association next season after being a perennial SoCon foe for many years.
After an April 7 home game against 2012 Big South Champion and NCAA Tournament 2nd round participant Winthrop, Davidson will conclude its season with contests against South Carolina and Clemson April 13 as part of the Manchester Cup in nearby Rock Hill, S.C. The Wildcats have won three straight against the Gamecocks and played Clemson to a 0-0 draw in their 2012 fall opener.
“The matches in the spring are important opportunities for the players to illustrate their development and for the new group to chart our new direction. We will be playing against athletic, talented programs which will be important measuring sticks to show where we are – and to give important insights for what we can achieve next fall.”
