Ludwick, Onken Claim Titles on Day One of CCSA Meet

ATHENS, Ga. – Dylan Ludwick and Drew Onken successfully defended individual titles while Kaliya Burton-Akright posted a top-five finish on the first day of action at the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association's 2013 Swimming & Diving Championships, held at the University of Georgia's Gabrielson Natatorium.
The men's squad sits first overall heading into the second day of competition. With 265.5 points, the Wildcats are 38 points ahead of second-place College of Charleston (227.5). The Davidson women are currently seventh overall with 80 points, 13.5 points behind sixth-place College of Charleston (93.5). Defending champion Florida Gulf Coast leads the pack with 245 points, followed by Liberty with 182.5.
Onken took the 200-yard individual medley, just missing his own Davidson program record by clocking in at 1:47.95. His time qualified him for the NCAA “B” standard, and marked the second straight year he has earned the 200 IM title. Onken was also a member of the 'Cats' winning medley relay.
Last season's Most Outstanding Freshman, Ludwick earned his second consecutive title in the 500-yard freestyle. His mark of 4:25.52 was less than two-tenths of a second over the school record, which he also owns.
Also in the 500-yard freestyle, teammate Will Fox touched third with a time of 4:32.52. His performance in the preliminaries ranks fourth all-time in Davidson history. Ben Stewart-Bates also swam a personal best in the preliminaries of the event, later taking eighth place in a time of 4:40.07.
Grant Smith and Ethan Levinson joined Onken in the “A” final of the 200-yard IM, taking fifth and eighth place, respectively. Smith posted a time of 1:53.07 in his debut at the meet while Levinson touched the pad in 1:54.98. Both will join the all-time top-10 based on their times from the day's prelims.
A trio of Wildcats finished in the top five of the 50-yard freestyle, led by Wills Cooper's runner up finish. Cooper, who grabbed second from lane one, posted a time of 20.79 to finish just .03 seconds over his career best. Cameron Bard and Brandon Kegley finished back-to-back in fourth and fifth for the 'Cats, with Bard swimming a 21.12 and Kegley clocking in at 21.13.
Onken, Fox and Kegley then teamed with Luke Burton for the win in the 400-yard medley relay. The quartet earned a tight victory over Gardner-Webb with a time of 3:19.46. Burton and Kegley also joined Bard and Cooper for a second place finish in the 200-yard free relay, combining for a time of 1:22.30 to finish less than a second behind first-place CofC.
Brian McRae picked up a second-place finish for the Wildcats in the 3-meter diving competition, recording a score of 265.10.
Fellow diver Burton-Akright was one the leaders on the women's side, taking fourth place overall in the 1-meter dive. She recorded a score of 253.40
Liz Mace recorded a personal best for a 13th place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 5:04.22 to join the Wildcats' all-time top-10 list. She was closely followed by Anna Blair Bullock, who claimed 15th in a time of 5:06.62. Jessica Miller rounded things out for the 'Cats in 16th place.
The women's 200-yard freestyle relay claimed fourth place overall, as Lauren Malachowski, Meredith Nakano, Caroline Vrana and Jean DeOrnellas swam a time of 1:34.65.
Day two of the action will kick off at with preliminaries at 10 a.m. Friday mornings. The top 16 swimmers in each event will continue on to finals at 6 p.m. at Gabrielsen Natatorium.
