DAVIDSON, N.C. – Emily Cooke scored a career-high four goals, but Virginia Tech's Megan Will countered with five points of her own in leading the Hokies to a 12-8 win over the Wildcats on Wednesday evening at Richardson Stadium in women's lacrosse.

Cooke led four 'Cats (0-1) who etched their names in the scorer's book. Ann Fucigna fired in two goals, while Emily Rademacher and Alanna Parker scored one goal each. Rademacher added an assist.

Will had four goals and an assist, picking up three of the goals in the second half as Tech (1-2) held off the Wildcats, who cut a four-goal deficit to two (10-8) with 16 minutes still left.

Julia Heaps and Meg Bartley scored twice each for Virginia Tech and four other Hokies netted one goal apiece. Heaps added three assists to give her five points.

The first half saw both teams go back-and-forth through the first 13 minutes. Cooke opened the scoring with a shot to the corner post. Then down 4-2, Fucigna got in on the scoring with a strike at the 12:59 mark.

Virginia Tech countered with three goals, including a Heaps score with 2:08, to close out the half up 7-4.

Cooke netted her third score of the game to open the second half, but Tech came right back and scored two of its own in a minute and a half stretch for a 9-5 lead.

Davidson got rolling again and scored three of the next four goals over a seven-minute span, including Cooke's fourth score of the game to make it 10-8 with 16:36 left. The Wildcats though were held scoreless the rest of the way and Tech added two more goals for the final of 12-8.

The 'Cats fired off 17 shots to the Hokies' 25, but they had 13 groundballs and were 11-for-15 on clears.

Davidson was opening its 2013 season and facing the Hokies for the 17th time in the all-time series.

The Wildcats remain at home and play host to Kennesaw State this coming Monday night, Feb. 25, at 6 p.m.

Game Notes: The Wildcats are 7-13 in home openers and 8-12 in season openers … this was the second time Davidson had opened the season against an ACC opponent, with the other being against North Carolina in 2003 … head coach Kim Wayne is 21 wins from 50 for her five-year career at Davidson.
