DAVIDSON, N.C. — Three players led the Davidson men's tennis team to a 2-0 day by winning three of their singles and doubles matches vs. Wingate and Presbyterian as the Wildcats won their first two matches of the season with 5-0 and 4-0 wins, respectively, on Saturday afternoon at the Knobloch Tennis Center.
The Wildcats, off since Jan. 19 when they played No. 60 Clemson, moved to 2-1 on the season with a pair of non-conference wins.
Senior Joe Schafer picked up 6-2, 6-4 and 6-3, 6-3 singles wins, while teaming up with Ethan Kallick at No. 2 doubles vs. Wingate (2-2) to net an 8-5 victory. Davidson swept all three doubles spots in the match.
Fellow classmate Chris Mark tallied a pair of doubles wins with Kevin Moore, scoring an 8-5 win at No. 1 vs. Wingate and then helping the Wildcats' seal up the doubles point vs. Presbyterian (3-4) with an 8-6 decision. He won his first singles match of the season with a 7-5, 6-1 straight-set decision at No. 4 against the Blue Hose's Andrew Brigham.
All-SoCon Freshman Team performer Nicky Kunz won a singles match vs. Wingate (6-7, 6-1, 6-1) and two doubles matches, scoring an 8-5 win with Connor Evins and then an 8-4 victory vs. Presbyterian with Robert Lightbourn.
Lightbourn registered a three-set win against the Blue Hose at No. 3 singles, taking home a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 decision.
Alex Howard and Roger Irigoyen Berlanga each won singles matches. Howard won his first career collegiate match with a 7-6, 6-2 decision against Josh Eardley of Wingate. Berlanga, in his first official collegiate match, took a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 6 to give Davidson one of its five points.
Davidson will take on Gardner-Webb, Feb. 5, for a mid-week match starting at 5 p.m.
