HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Davidson men's golf team opened their spring campaign with a solid sixth place finish out 18 teams at the Wexford Plantation Collegiate hosted by Francis Marion.

Despite light rain on Tuesday, the 18-team field was able to complete Monday's delayed second round – five holes for each squad – and then the final 18 holes.

The annual event was played on the 6,828-yard, par 72 Wexford Plantation layout designed by Arnold Palmer.

As a team, the Wildcats finished the two-day tournament with a 54-hole total of 899 (299-294-306), which was just two strokes behind Samford.

Highlighted by a second-round 70, Samuel Echikson (75-70-77 = 222) paced Davidson on the individual leaderboard coming home tied for 14th.

The Wildcats' overnight leader, John Skeadas III (73-76-74 = 223), finished a stroke back of Echikson in a tie for 20th, while Richard Fountain (75-72-77 = 224) used an even-par 72 in round two to place just outside the top 25.

Also competing for Davidson was David Sargent (T-41st) and Ralph Blasey (T-68th), who recorded final totals of 231 and 238, respectively.

Georgia Southern carded a 293-team score for the third round and rallied past second-round leader Richmond to claim the team title with a 54-hole score of 879.

South Florida's Trey Valentine overcame a one-stroke deficit during the final 18 holes to claim medalist honors with a four-under 212 (69-73-70).

In addition to Wildcats and host Patriots, this year's field included Campbell, Connecticut, Dayton, DePaul, Elon, Georgia Southern, Ohio, Presbyterian College, Radford, Richmond, Samford, USC Aiken, South Florida, Western Carolina, William & Mary, and defending team champion Georgia State.

The Wildcats, who recorded their fifth Top-10 finish in as many outings this year, will enjoy a two-week break before hosting the Davidson College Invitational at River Run Country Club March 4-5.
