DAVIDSON, N.C. – Sophomore Anthony Elias earned an 11-8 decision over No. 24 Sam Speno of NC State, but Davidson was defeated by Ohio Northern, 20-18, and NC State, 37-9, in a non-conference wrestling tri-meet Sunday afternoon in Belk Arena.

NC State (5-5, 0-2 ACC) went 2-0 for the day, earning a 32-11 victory over Ohio Northern (16-4, 4-1 OAC) in the first match of the meet.

Davidson (6-13, 1-5 SoCon) held an 18-17 lead entering the final bout against Ohio Northern, but heavyweight Cody Lovejoy was able to earn a 7-2 decision over Ed Isola.

The Wildcats spotted the Polar Bears six points to start the match after forfeiting 125 pounds, but built a 12-6 lead after Elias and Matt Zarth (141) both earned decisions and 149-pounder Kevin Birmingham pinned Jonathan Hoopes in 2:15. ONU rallied though and built a 17-12 lead with a pair of decisions and a technical fall at 174 pounds by Kyle Kwiat, the defending NCAA Division III national champion and current No. 1 at the weight class.

Sophomore Ian Solcz earned a one-point decision at 184 pounds and junior Scott Patrick put the Wildcats in position to win after he rallied from a 6-0 deficit after nearly getting pinned in the first period and took a thrilling 14-7 decision at 197.

Davidson's 165, 174, 184 and 197-pound wrestlers were all wrestling up a weight class.

Against NC State, Elias led from the start, earning a pair of first period takedowns and scoring back-points in the second period in addition to another takedown, to build an 8-4 lead. Speno, who's ranked No. 24 in the nation in the NCAA Coaches Poll, rallied for his first takedowns in the final frame, but it was not enough as Elias escaped twice and earned the riding time point for the final margin.

Solcz (174) and Patrick (184) both earned decisions to also finish the day undefeated. Matthew Nereim (157) and Mike Kosoy (285) paced the Wolfpack with wins by fall.

Davidson will conclude the regular season Sunday at 1 p.m. in Belk Arena, hosting Appalachian State.
