Team hopes to make this an annual tradition.
Athletic team banquets are a wonderful way to close the season, recognize individual achievements and celebrate the seniors for their contribution to the program. Such was the case at the Davidson volleyball team banquet held last Saturday in the Lilly Family Gallery.
Teammates and coaches were joined by parents, family, friends and supporters to honor the 2012 Wildcats and their successes both on and off the court. Seniors Molly Crenshaw '13 and Ariel Ley '13 were not only recognized for their four-year careers representing the Red & Black, but used the opportunity to make a great statement on their faith in the future of the program.
Their volleyball teammates initially pooled their dollars to purchase scrapbooks and other memorabilia for the seniors. Instead, Crenshaw and Ley took the initiative to start a tradition of giving back to the Davidson Volleyball program. They insisted that the money, over $200, go back to the volleyball program via the Davidson Athletic Foundation (DAF). “It was important to Ariel and me to give a gift that keeps on giving,” Crenshaw explained.
“When the team asked them if we could give them an extra little gift, they insisted that we donate all of the money instead,” said junior Tindall Sewell '14. “Molly and Ariel have left their legacy on Davidson Volleyball through their relentless hard work and commitment to the team so their selflessness is no surprise.”
Last year the DAF partnered with the Annual Fund to encourage student athlete participation in the Senior Class Gift. In the class of 2012, 95.5 percent of student athletes made their gift to athletics.
