Wildcats Open Season at JDL Fast Track Invite

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Davidson women's track and field team kicked off the 2013-14 indoor season on Saturday, coming away with a pair of program records and a win at the JDL Fast Track Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Ashlyn Gruber set a new school mark in the 1000m, taking fifth overall in a time of 3:05.84. Molly McGrath also ran the event, taking ninth in 3:15.68.
Molly Marshall broke her own program record in the pole vault, clearing 3.05m (10-10.00).
Freshman Hannah Rieden won the mile, finishing in 5:11.17 to best the runner-up by more than nine seconds. Rachel McKay was seventh in the race for the 'Cats, crossing the line in 5:36.57, while Maggie Rickard followed in eighth in a time of 5:39.46.
Kate Kostecky nearly came away with another record for the Wildcats. She took 15th in the 500-meter dash, running a 1:21.78 and missing the mark by .3 seconds.
Sarah Paddon claimed fourth in the 3,000m run, crossing the line in 10:19.06. She was immediately followed by Erin Osment, who took fifth in 10:20.72. Both have qualified for the fast heat at the SoCon Championships. The Wildcats totaled five in the top ten of the event, as Jenny Fritz was seventh in 10:30.19, Hayden Bates took eighth in 10:39.87 and Ali Cobb claimed ninth in 10:40.92. Caroline Turner also competed, finishing 15th in a time of 11:12.17, while Lauren Carter was 19th in 11:41.38.
Following an extended break for the holidays, the Wildcats return to the track January 17-18. They will travel to Johnson City, Tenn., to take part in the Niwsonger Invitational, hosted by East Tennessee State.
