Wildcats Fall at Samford, 3-0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Bulldogs hit .392 with 52 kills in taking a 3-0 victory from the Davidson Wildcats in Southern Conference action at the Pete Hanna Center in Birmingham Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats fell by set scores of 22-25, 18-25 and 21-25.
Tindall Sewell led the Wildcats (12-13, 3-8 SoCon) with nine kills and a pair of blocks, hitting .389. Emily Franklin slammed down eight kills to go with a team-high three block assists and block solo. Franklin hit .667 to lead Davidson, who finished with a .232 attacking percentage. Caroline Brown had six kills and a trio of digs, also adding an ace.
Mikayla Derochie assisted on 32 of the team's 37 kills, also adding in three kills in hitting .333. Taylor Pisel came up with for kills to hit .429 with a pair of block assists, while Megan Chamberlin and Rachel Earnhardt each grabbed a trio of kills. Anastasia Owen led the team in digs with 10.
Michaela Reesor had a team-high 20 kills for the Bulldogs (17-10, 8-4 SoCon), hitting .457 on the afternoon. Katie Murphy had 12 kills to hit .625, while Stephanie Palmer came away with 46 assists and seven digs. Chesli Carter served up three aces and also led the Bulldogs with 10 digs.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 6-2 lead on a block by Franklin and Brown to start set one, but the Bulldogs battled right back to tie set at 7-7 with a block from Stephanie Palmer and Taylor Palmer. The teams played to an 11-11 tie, but Samford scored three straight in taking a 14-11 tie. The Wildcats made it three in a row soon after, cutting the deficit to two at 18-16, and later nailed three more consecutive points to come within a point of tying the set at 20-19. However, Samford tallied the final three points of the set in taking the 25-22 victory.
Set number two was a tight battle to start, but the Bulldogs would rattle off eight straight points to take a 21-14 lead before a delay of game point was awarded to the Wildcats to halt the streak. With Samford in position to finish off the set, Sewell posted a pair of kills to keep it going but the Bulldogs would come up with the final kill and take the set 25-18 for a 2-0 lead.
The teams traded off scoring for the start of the third set, as Davidson trailed by just a point at 13-12. A kill by Pisel and an ace from Brown kept the Wildcats in the game, still trailing by one. Samford claimed three straight points to set up match point before Brown slammed down a kill to break the scoring streak. However, Reesor added her final kill of the day to give the Bulldogs the 25-21 win and 3-0 match win.
Davidson next heads to Tennessee, where they will face the Chattanooga Mocs in a rematch Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Chattanooga.
