SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Davidson men's and women's cross country teams are set to compete in the 2013 Southern Conference Cross Country Championships, hosted by Samford at Veteran's Park in Birmingham, Ala., Saturday.
The event begins with the men's 8K race at 10 a.m., followed by the women's 5K at 10:45 a.m. The event will be concluded with an awards ceremony to honor top team and individual performances.
It will be Davidson's final appearance at the SoCon Cross Country Championships, as both teams are moving to the Atlantic 10 Conference in 2014.
The men's team posted a fourth place finish in last year's meet and was picked to finish fifth this year in the coaches' preseason poll. The trio of Sal del Giudice, Whitner Chase and Daniel Samet have led the Wildcats in the four regular season meets so far this season. Del Giudice has paced the Davidson in the last two meets, posting the team's top 8K time of the season in the most recent outing at Louisville of 25:23.1, and has placed in the Top 25 in three out of four meets.
Samet led the 'Cats to victory in the season-opening Carolina Challenge with a fourth place finish and Chase was the top finisher at the Wake Forest Invitational in 13th. Grayam Sailor-Tynes and Samet are Davidson's top returning finishers from the 2012 SoCon Championships, as the duo placed 22nd and 23rd, respectively, and all-conference performers Demetrios Pagonis and Wes Reynolds graduated.
The UNCG and Furman men's cross country teams were tabbed as preseason co-favorites in the coaches' poll and will look to stop defending champion Appalachian State from taking home a second straight title. The Spartans are led by two-time SoCon Runner of the Year Paul Chelimo and 2012 All-SoCon performer Paul Katam. Chelimo is gunning for his third consecutive first-place finish at the SoCon Championship.
The men's race will also feature two-time SoCon Runners of the Week James Howard-Smith (Appalachian State), Raeven Lantz (The Citadel) and Luis Vargas (Elon), as well as SoCon Runner of the Week selections Lucas Cotter (Chattanooga) and Kyle McFoy (Appalachian State).
The Davidson women were picked to finish fifth at the championships in the 2013 preseason poll. They have been led this season by Erin Osment, who has three top-10 finishes this season, including a third-place finish to help the Wildcats' claim the team title at the USC Upstate Eye Opener to open the season. She recently posted a career-best time of 18:17.20 at the Crimson Classic on Oct. 18.
Newcomer Jenny Fritz has consistently been one of the Wildcats' top performers, and will look to make an impact in her SoCon debut. Fritz has three top-15 finishes on the season, and set a personal best of 18:29.80 at the Winthrop Adidas Classic (9/21).
The Wildcats placed fifth at last season's championship meet, held in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. Then-freshman Olivia Menden was honored with a spot on the SoCon All-Freshman team for her performance at the event.
Elon's women's team was chosen as the preseason favorite and hopes to cap the year with a SoCon title. The Phoenix finished just four points behind champion Appalachian State at last year's championship race. Elon's Allyson Oram will look to lead the Phoenix to a team win and improve from her 11th-place finish at last year's championship. Samford's Lauren D'Alessio is back and attempting to defend her individual title from 2012 and give the Bulldogs a shot at a first-place finish.
The women's race will also feature two-time SoCon Runners of the Week Danielle McKee (The Citadel) and Teghan Henderson (Chattanooga), along with SoCon Runner of the Week selections Kayla Schneider (Appalachian State), Shaina Sumney (UNCG) and Allie Buchalski (Furman).
