Swimming & Diving Off to Solid Start at All-N.C. Invite

GREENSBORO, N.C. – With five top-5 finishes on the day, the Davidson swimming & diving teams are off to a strong start after day one of the All-North Carolina Invitational, hosted by N.C. State at the Greensboro Aquatic Center Thursday evening.
A number of impressive swims, especially by newcomers, led the way to a third-place ranking for the women's squad through 12 events. With 406 points, the Wildcat women trail just the host Wolfpack (533 points) and East Carolina (502.5) in the 12-team meet. The Davidson men are also sitting in third with 331 points behind ECU (489) and N.C. State (474). Eight teams are competing in the men's division.
The women started the meet with a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, as veterans Meredith Nakano and Angie Healy combined with newcomers Kassie Shannon and Erica Clancy for a time of 1:36.74. Clancy, Healy and Shannon followed that up with a trio of top-10 finishes in the 50-yard freestyle, with Clancy leading the way in 24.00 for fourth place. Healy was seventh in 24.35, while Shannon claimed eighth with a time of 24.53.
The original quartet combined for the 400-yard medley relay as well, wrapping up day one of action by taking sixth in the event. They claimed a time of 3:58.65.
Rookie Elise Lankiewicz also had a great collegiate debut, taking fifth in the 500-yard freestyle. She touched the wall in 5:04.46 and was joined in the top-15 by Anna Blair Bullock. Bullock recorded a time of 5:14.36 in the event.
In the 200-yard IM, Emily Covert clocked in at 2:14.96 for 16th place. She was followed by Kate Carter, who grabbed 17th in 2:14.98.
For the men, Dylan Ludwick paced the squad with a fifth-place finish in the first individual event of the meet – the 500-yard free. He clocked in at 4:37.85 in the race while Max Schimanski touched the pads in 4:48.81 for 13th place. Ben Stewart-Bates was close behind in 16th with a time of 4:51.67.
Grant Smith grabbed another top-10 finish, taking tenth in the 200-yard IM. He finished in 1:57.26 and was followed by freshman Luke Boliek who took 18th in his collegiate debut with a time of 2:00.59. Fellow newcomer Spencer Davies finished 20th in the event in 2:01.22.
In the 50-yard free, Cameron Bard touched fifth in 21.28 while Brandon Kegley finished in a tie for 17th with a time of 21.97. The men then finished things up with the 400-yard medley relay, as Ludwick teamed with Luke Burton, Spencer Gill and Thomas Bigham for a ninth place finish in 3:32.03.
The Wildcats will continue the action tomorrow morning at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
