DAVIDSON, N.C. – High school seniors Mikayla Derochie (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) and Emily Franklin (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) recently committed to continuing their volleyball careers at Davidson College. The duo will join the Wildcats for the 2013 season, announced head coach Chris Willis on Wednesday.
A 5'11 setter, Derochie becomes the Cats' third Golden State native, joining Hannah Rau and Madisson Smith (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif) on the roster. A three-year letterwinner for Connie Halfaker at Ramona High School, she was named to both the all-league and All-CIF Second Teams. Derochie earned MVP honors as well as a spot on the all-tournament teams at both Palm Springs and Scripps Ranch. As a senior in 2012, she was named first team all-league, All-CIF Second Team and a Coaches' Award winner. Derochie averaged 11.8 assists per set for the Bulldogs in 2012 with 31 digs, 18 kills and six aces.
“Mikayla adds some tremendous depth to our program at the setter position,” said Coach Willis. “Her size and ability to run a fast offense will help tremendously with her transition to the college level.”
The daughter of Randy and Kim Derochie and Susan Lawlor, Derochie was named to the Union Tribune All-Academic Team as both a junior and senior. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, she attended French Immersion School for four years and intends to major in biology at Davidson.
Joining Derochie will be Franklin, who comes to Davidson from nearby Providence High School. A 6'1 middle hitter, Franklin is a three-time letterwinner for Coach Karen Bradbury's Panthers. A two-time all-conference honoree, she led her team to the conference championship in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Franklin also helped the Panthers to finish as the runner-up at the 2010 state championship. As a senior in 2012, she finished the season hitting .595 with 92 blocks and 141 kills.
“Emily is a wonderful fit for our program,” commented Willis. “She meshed with the team from the first time on our campus. Her abilities on the court will translate right way, as she is a physical blocker and has a huge window for attacking. We feel much better about the strength of our middles with Emily joining the team.”
The daughter of Amy and Robert, Franklin is a member of the National Honor Society who ranks in the top 10 percent of Providence's senior class. She also played basketball for two seasons, following in the footsteps of mom Amy who played for Clemson.
The Wildcats went 11-16 overall and 7-9 in SoCon action last season. They claimed the north division's fourth seed in the 2012 SoCon Tournament, falling to top-seeded Samford 3-0 in the quarterfinals. The 'Cats' return four of last year's starters in 2013, losing starting setter Ariel Ley and libero Molly Crenshaw to graduation.
