DAVIDSON, N.C. – The men's soccer team returns home this weekend to host the 9th annual Davidson adidas Classic at Alumni Stadium. USC Upstate and Appalachian State will kick-off the event with a 5 p.m. contest Saturday, followed by the host Wildcats and Richmond at 7 p.m.
On Monday, the Spiders and Mountaineers will play the early contest before Davidson and USC Upstate take to the field at 7 p.m.
“We can't wait to jump back in to action at home, with Richmond and USC Upstate each providing intriguing match-ups and opportunities to prove our winning ways,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear.
“The adidas Classic is always a lot of fun for us as we welcome three teams to our wonderful 1992 Team Field and Alumni Soccer Stadium. For local soccer fans, the event features two evenings of exciting doubleheaders in a great setting.”
The Wildcats, who are 9-6-1 all-time in the adidas Classic, enter 0-2-1 after falling at Ohio State in overtime last Sunday.
Despite losses to Wright State and the Buckeyes in the Wolstein Classic, Davidson's Andrew DiLallo and Alex Givens were named to the all-tournament team.
A senior from Wellington, Fla., DiLallo leads the 'Cats in scoring on the young season with a pair of goals on his only shot attempts.
After Monday's contest with the Spartans, Davidson will conclude its three-game homestand with a 7 p.m. contest against East Tennessee State Saturday, September 15.
Scouting Appalachian State: Returns six starters from last year's club that went 10-5-4… The Mountaineers are in the midst of an eight-game road trip… David Dodge leads the team in scoring with two goals… Will meet Davidson in the final game of the regular season Oct. 27 in Boone… Former Davidson assistant coach Jeff Bilyk is now on the staff at Appalachian State…
Scouting Richmond: Finished the 2011 season 5-12-1… Leigh Cowlishaw was tabbed interim head coach earlier this summer after former Davidson assistant Clint Peay accepted a position with the U-17 National Team… Enters 1-2-0 on the season after consecutive losses to Virginia Tech and William & Mary following a 1-0 win over James Madison.
Scouting USC Upstate: Greg Hooks is 289-133-32 in 25 seasons as a collegiate head coach… Return seven starters from last year's team that went 5-8-2 overall… Game with Appalachian State is the first of four consecutive against SoCon foes… Three different Spartans have found the back of the net this season… Enters on a two-match winning streak...
