DAVIDSON, N.C. - Elon's Chris Thomas scored the lone two goals of the match to tie the school's career record and lead the Phoenix to a 2-0 victory over Davidson in Southern Conference men's soccer action Friday night at Alumni Stadium.
Senior captain Brian McGue led Davidson (4-4-1, 0-2-0 SoCon) with six shots, but Elon (6-2-1) goalkeeper Nathan Dean made three saves for the shutout.
“Elon is good, and they played well tonight,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “Chris Thomas continues to be in fine form, and he was their match winner again.”
Thomas put Elon on top in the 27th minute when Gabe Latigue found him directly in front of the net with a short cross along the goal line from the right.
The 'Cats' best chance for an equalizer began in the 68th minute when Davidson totaled four shots and three corner kicks in less than three minutes, but the Elon defense was able to deflect two of the shots and the other two were not on goal.
“I wish we could have provided a better, all-around team performance,” said Spear. “With that said, we had some good phases in the match, and we created just enough opportunities to tie the game in the second half. But not converting and then Thomas' second goal was the difference.”
In the 78th minute; Matt Wescoe found Thomas down the middle of the field, and Thomas was able to put the game out of reach with his 13th goal of the season and the 43rd of his career.
Shots on goal were even at three apiece, but Elon held a 23-12 advantage in shots overall. Matt Pacifici made two saves for Davidson. The Wildcats held the advantage in corner kicks, 7-4.
Kickoff was delayed 1 hour, 13 minutes due to lightning in the area.
Davidson will return to action Tuesday hosting Wake Forest at 7 p.m. in Alumni Stadium.
