SoCon Play Begins, Wildcats Open vs. Chattanooga and Samford at Alumni Stadium

DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's soccer team gears up for Southern Conference play this weekend when it plays host to Chattanooga and Samford, Friday and Sunday, at Alumni Stadium.
The Matchup
Davidson, which closed out its non-conference slate of games last weekend, looks for a strong start in league play when it opens at home against Chattanooga Friday at 7 p.m. and then closes out the weekend with a 2 p.m. contest on Sunday vs. Samford.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
The Wildcats have dominated the series vs. Chattanooga since first facing the Mocs in 1996, sporting a solid 16-1-1 record. Last year saw the 'Cats picked up a 2-1 overtime win on the road, making it seven straight victories in the all-time series.
Davidson's record vs. Samford is 1-1-3. A year ago in Birmingham, the Wildcats dropped a 2-0 decision, which snapped a string of three games in a row that went into overtime and resulted in a tie.
Scouting the Wildcats
Davidson (2-4-2) scored its second win of the season, 1-0 victory over cross-county rival Charlotte last Thursday ... the 'Cats lost on Sunday to William & Mary, 3-0 ... Becca Fisher headed in the game-winner, the fifth of her career, in the second half for her first goal of the season ... it was the first win for the Wildcats at Charlotte since 2005 ... goalkeeper Rachel Locke earned the shutout, the fifth of her career ... she has started seven of the eight games and registered 31 saves (4th in league) ... Tori Krause has four points on the season with a pair of goals, while Stephanie Piperno and Rachael Newmister have tallied a goal and assist each for three points ... Piperno's 29 shots are second-most in the SoCon ... in last year's overtime win vs. Chattanooga, Julia Singley kicked in the game-winner in the seventh minute of overtime ... Davidson is 12-5-1 all-time in SoCon openers and 5-1-1 in SoCon home openers ... the Wildcats return 23 of its 29 letterwinners, including nine starters, from last year ... Davidson was picked to finish fifth in the SoCon preseason poll after sporting a 7-4 record last year and finishing fourth overall ... head coach Greg Ashton is 10 wins away from reach 100 for his career at Davidson.

Scouting the Mocs
Chattanoog (2-3-1) has been off since a 1-0 triumph against Gardner-Webb, Sept. 7 ... Crystal Mackezyk kicked in the game-winner, with an assist from Hannah Wyatt ... Wyatt is tied for the team-leading with six points, four of them coming on assists ... she is tied for the lead in the SoCon in assists ... Becca Smith has a team-best thee goals ... she is second in school history in goals (33) and points (80) ... UTC ranks second in the league in goals (10) ... the Mocs, on a five-game road swing, have played Lipscomb (T, 2-2), Austin Peay (L, 1-4) and Gardner-Webb (W, 1-0) during the trip ... head coach J.D. Kyzer has a career mark of 77-117-18 at UTC in his 12 years ... the Mocs were picked last in the SoCon preseason poll ... they return 13 letterwinners from last season's 6-10-2 squad (1-9-1 SoCon).
Scouting the Bulldogs
Samford (3-5-0) plays at Georgia Southern Friday, before heading up to Davidson on Sunday ... prior to its game at GSU, the Bulldogs dropped back-to-back 2-1 decisions to Kennesaw State and Jacksonville State last weekend ... Amanda Abbott scored in both games ... Kaley Blanton has a team-high three goals for six points, while three other Bulldogs are tied with four points ... Samford is the defeating SoCon champs after going 9-0-1 in the league last year and winning the tournament, 1-0, vs. Coll. of Charleston ... the Bulldogs, who finished 14-6-2 a year ago, return 14 letterwinners ... eight of those returners are starters ... Samford has been to the NCAA three times (2011, 2007, 2005).
Next on the Schedule
Davidson takes to the road for a pair of league games to close out the month of September, playing at Western Carolina and Appalachian State, Sept. 28-30.
