SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Freshman Valeriy Sviderskiy of the Davidson men's soccer team has been named Southern Conference Player of the Week for matches played Sept. 10-16, as announced by the league office Tuesday morning.
“As a freshman forward, it can be hard at times to find opportunities to impact,” said Wildcat head coach Matt Spear. “Valeriy stepped up in a huge way, which is great so early in his college career. Confidence and timing are really important to strikers, so this breakthrough will only increase his continued development and our attacking efficiency.”
For the week, Sviderskiy finished with three goals, while helping the Wildcats to overtime victories over USC Upstate and East Tennessee State.
On Monday, he gave Davidson a 3-1 lead with a pair of strikes off the bench less than three minutes apart. Shortly after he scored his first collegiate goal off a chipped through ball, Sviderskiy tracked down his own one-on-one that Upstate's keeper was unable to gather and slid a shot past two defenders inside the far post.
Against the Buccaneers, Sviderskiy tied the score in the 80th minute when he put away a Coleman O'Neill long free kick that was flicked on by Andrew DiLallo.
College Sports Madness also named Sviderskiy the Conference's Player of the Week on Monday afternoon.
Davidson returns to action Friday evening with a 7 p.m. contest at Presbyterian.
