DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson women's tennis team had a very strong first Fall event over the weekend, taking home three flights and tying for another at the Davidson Invitational Friday and Saturday at the Covington Tennis Courts.
Frizzi Bschorer, Tamara Hill, Blake Nickles, Courtney McCray and Laina Cummer all took home flight titles.
In her first collegiate Fall event, Cummer sported a 2-1 record at the No. 2 singles flight to tie Nicole Laduca of East Carolina and Tamara Stanic of Campbell. She scored a split her first two sets with Stanic, but sealed her first win with a 12-10 tie-breaker victory. The first-year player then won an impressive 6-1, 6-1 decision over Jenny Lunde of Gardner-Webb. Cummer's lone defeat was to Laduca, a 6-4, 6-3 defeat.
In the No. 6 singles flight, Bschorer went 2-0 by capturing 6-4, 6-0 and 6-7, 7-5, (10-7) triumphs over players from Campbell and East Carolina.
Hill, Nickles and McCray all went undefeated at the No. 7 and 8 flights, respectively. Hill tallied a win each in both flights, scoring a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 7 and then allowed just one game to her opponent in a strong 6-0, 6-1 win. McCray netted a 6-4, 6-2 at No. 8 and Nickles finished off Neena Wanko of East Carolina with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph. The sophomore also earned a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6 flight.
At the No. 1 singles flight, Brites Moniz Soares, who last year captured a couple singles titles during the Fall, played two tie-breaker sets against Campbell and Gardner-Webb. Fellow classmate Nisha Crouser scored a win at No. 3 singles flight after Melis Tanik of ECU retired.
Elise Held competed at No. 4 singles flight, while Catherine Wood was in the No. 5 singles flight and earned a nice 6-4, 6-0 win.
Davidson also sent out nine different pairs of doubles teams. Moniz-Soares and Cummer teamed up at No. 1 and netted a win, 8-3, over a pair from Campbell. Cummer also teamed up with Crouser at the No. 2 doubles flight and scored an 8-6 triumph.
Bschorer teamed up with Wood and Hill, dropping both matches played, in the third doubles flight.
The 'Cats head to Charleston, S.C., to play in Charleston Invitational, Sept. 14-16.
