DAVIDSON, N.C. – Running back Nick Campanella scored four touchdowns to lead Georgetown past Davidson, 35-14 in the season-opening football contest for both teams Saturday night on Smith Field at Richardson Stadium.

Hoyas' back-up quarterback Aaron Aiken rushed for 113 yards and threw two touchdown passes after starting quarterback Isaiah Kempf left the game on his club's fifth offensive play.

Georgetown totaled 408 yards, including 280 on the ground, while holding the Wildcats to 208 yards of total offense, using big plays to setup scoring drives.

Jonathan Carkhuff completed 32-of-53 attempts for Davidson for 226 yards, connecting with Lanny Funsten eight times for 89 yards and a touchdown. Carkhuff also connected late with Reese Williams for a touchdown.

Aiken completed 8-of-21 passes for 128 yards, with long strikes of 48 yards and 37 yards. Campanella gained 129 yards on the ground on 12 attempts, including touchdown runs of 53 yards and 45 yards, scoring a total of three touchdowns on the ground and one in the air.

Linebacker Patrick Moynahan led the 'Cats defensively with 11 tackles, while Jelani Doeman and Ben Prater finished with 10 each. Defensive back Michael Corbett made five stops to go along with an interception.

Linebacker Robert McCabe paced the Hoyas with a game-high 17 tackles and defensive back Nick Aliferi had 11. Linebacker Alec May was in on two sacks, while Dustin Wharton and Andrew Maliska were also able to get to Carkhuff in the backfield.

Davidson got on the scoreboard first as Corbett's interception and 39-yard return setup a Davidson touchdown drive from Georgetown's 24-yard line. On the third play of the drive, Carkuff connected with Funsten for an 18-yard touchdown reception with 7:40 remaining in the first quarter.

Georgetown answered on its next possession though, as Aiken found Kevin Macrai open deep in the middle of the field for a 48-yard touchdown reception.

After trading three-and-out possessions, Georgetown broke off another big play as Campanella got free for a 53-yard touchdown run during the Hoyas' first possession of the second quarter.

Both defenses held strong for the remainder of the half, as Davidson tallied the only first down and went to the locker room trailing 14-7.

“I thought our effort was good on both sides of the ball,” said head coach Tripp Merritt. “That might be the best team we play all year. They have great size on both sides of the ball.

“If we were able to connect on one more play in the first half, it would have been a different football game.”

Georgetown struck on its second possession of the second half. A 37-yard pass from Aiken to Zack Wilkie gave the Hoyas the ball on Davidson's eight-yard line and a pass interference call put the ball on the two-yard line, where Campanella pounded it in for 21-7 advantage with 9:46 remaining in the third quarter.

Ty Parsons blocked a Davidson punt midway through the third quarter to setup another Georgetown scoring drive, giving the Hoyas great field position on Davidson's 33-yardline. Aiken converted a 4th-and-1 and a 3rd-and-11 on the ground to keep the drive alive and then found Campanella for a nine-yard touchdown reception on 3rd-and-8 with 3:32 remaining in the third quarter for a 28-7 margin.

Davidson drove 76 yards on eight plays late in the fourth quarter, scoring on a 15-yard pass to Reese Williams in the back corner of the endzone, but Georgetown answered with a 45-yard run by Campanella for the final margin with 2:32 to go.

Davidson hits the road next Saturday for its annual meeting against Lenoir-Rhyne, kicking off at 7 p.m. in Hickory, N.C.

Notes: Lightning delayed the kickoff 1 hour, 20 minutes … Georgetown's 280 yards on the ground surpassed the 2011 season high for rushing yards allowed in a game (219 at Dayton) … Williams' touchdown was his first since last year's opener against Georgetown after injury limited his 2011 season to three games.
