Davidson Swimming & Diving Releases 2012-13 Schedule

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Head swim coach John Young has announced the Davidson swimming & diving team's meet schedule for the 2012-13 season. The slate includes six dual meets and four home meets and culminates with the CCSA and NCAA championships.
The team will start the season in early October when they head to Greensboro, N.C., to compete in the N.C. College Kick Off. The event will feature three sessions, beginning with an evening session at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 5 with 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. sessions the following day.
Following their season opener the Wildcats will compete in a trio of dual meets, with the final two taking place at Charles A. Cannon Pool in Davidson. First, the 'Cats will travel to Greenville, N.C., to face East Carolina on Oct. 20, marking the sixth consecutive season in which the Pirates and the Wildcats will meet. ECU took last season's meet by a score of 181-109.5 on the women's side and 167-130 on the men's side.
Davidson will then welcome CCSA foe College of Charleston to town, hosting the Cougars in a 2 p.m. meet on Oct. 27. The women's team recorded a 167-133 win over CofC in Charleston, S.C., last season while the men's squad took a 163-131 loss. Both squads earned win the last time the two teams faced off in Davidson, as the Davidson women dominated the Cougars 213-84 and the men earned a 180-111 victory back in 2010 at Cannon Pool.
Fellow CCSA member VMI will also make the trek to Davidson, as the Wildcats welcome the Keydets to Cannon Pool on Nov. 10 for a 1 p.m. meet. The men have not faced VMI in a dual meet since the 2009-10 season, when Davidson downed the Keydets 160-54. The women's teams last squared off in the 2010-11 season with the Wildcats swimming to a 109-47 win.
The 'Cats will head to Gambier, Ohio, to close out November at the Kenyon Invitational set for Nov. 29 through Dec. 1. The meet will consist of five sessions, kicking off with a 6 p.m. session on Thursday night before moving to two sessions per day at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. for Friday and Saturday. The 2012-13 season marks the sixth straight season Davidson has competed at the meet, with the women's highest finish coming n 2009-10 when they took third. The men have twice finished third at the event, including last season.
On January 19th, the women's squad will host the University of Arkansas in an 11 a.m. match up at Cannon Pool. The Wildcats' women's team has not faced an SEC team in a head-to-head match up since the 2008-09 season when they fell to the Gamecocks of South Carolina by a score of 150-121.
January 26th will mark the final true dual meet of the season as the Wildcats travel to Boiling Springs, N.C., to taken fellow CCSA member Gardner-Webb on Jan. 26 at 1 p.m. The women's squad earned a 170-124 Senior Day win over the Runnin' Bulldogs in Davidson last season, while the men claimed a 196-89 victory.
The 'Cats will round on the regular season one last time at Cannon Pool by hosting the annual CCSA Duals. The men will take on CCSA member Howard, while the women's squad will host fellow league programs Howard, Liberty, Georgia Southern, North Carolina A&T and Radford at 1 p.m. Though the teams will all swim together, events will be scored as if each team is competing head to head. The Wildcat women had a successful outing at the event last season, winning against Georgia Southern, Campbell, Howard, NC A&T and Radford while falling to just Liberty by a score of 160.5-133.50. The men's team dominated Howard at the event, defeating the Bison 174-97.
Davidson will then travel to the 2013 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championships, held at the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., on Feb. 21-22. Senior Drew Onken, a two-time CCSA Swimmer of the Year and the 2010 Most Outstanding Freshman, will make his final appearance at the meet after leading the 'Cats to the CCSA Championship in his first two seasons before settling for a runner-up finish in 2012. The women's team, which finished sixth last season, last won the championship in 2008 and has earned the runner-up spot three times since then.
Following the CCSA meet, swimmers and divers who have met the standards will compete at the 2012 NCAA National Championships on the campus of IUPUI in Indianapolis, Ind. The women's meet will be held March 21-23, while the men will compete March 28-30. Last season, Onken set new program and league records in the 200-yard breaststroke and also competed in the 200- and 400-yard individual medley at the meet.
