DAVIDSON, N.C. – With the 2012 NCAA Southeast Regional being held in Charlotte, the Davidson Women's Cross Country team will stay close to home for most of the season in preparation for the meet. The slate was announced by head coach Jen Straub on Tuesday.
For the second consecutive season and the third since 2007, the Wildcats will open things up at the USC Upstate Eye Opener in Spartanburg, S.C., on August 31. Led by then-junior Natalie Abatek, the squad topped SoCon foes Wofford and the College of Charleston to take third at the event last season.
Next up for the 'Cats is the 26th Asics Winthrop Invitational, hosted by the Eagles in Rock Hill on September 15. The meet is yet another familiar one as Coach Straub's squad as competed in the event four previous times since 2007, including 2011. The Wildcats best finish came in 2007 when they won the meet, placing four runners in the top 10. Last season Erin Osment, Natalie Atabek and Sarah Paddon all placed in the top 10 to guide the squad to a second-place finish.
On September 28, the team will make the short trek to Charlotte to take part in the Charlotte Cross Country Invite as hosted by the UNC Charlotte 49ers. The event will again take place at McAlpine Park, where Osment led the 'Cats with a 13th place finish in 2011.
Davidson will return to McAlpine Park on October 12 for the Royal Cross Country Challenge, which will be hosted by Queens University. The freshman duo of Osment and Paddon turned in top-20 finishes to help the 'Cats to a fifth place ranking at the meet in 2011.
The squad will wrap up the regular season on October 27 when they travel to Charleston, S.C., to compete in the 2012 Southern Conference Cross Country Championships at the College of Charleston and The Citadel. The Wildcats have placed eighth at the event for the past two seasons, with Paddon earning SoCon Freshman of the Year honors for her 12th place finish.
For the third time this season, the 'Cats will travel back to McAlpine Park in Charlotte for the NCAA Southeast Regionals on November 10. Last season, it was Osment who led the 'Cats with an 86th place finish as the team took 28th overall.
