DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson volleyball team will host 12 home matches, including two tournaments at Belk Arena as part of the 2012 schedule as announced by head coach Chris Willis this week.
In addition to the annual Wildcat Classic, the 'Cats will host the 2012 Southern Conference Volleyball Tournament for the first time since 2002.
After welcoming former players back to campus for an alumni match on August 25 (5 p.m.), the Wildcats will officially open the 2012 season when they host in-state foe Gardner-Webb on August 28 at 7 p.m. Following last season's 3-0 win over the Runnin' Bulldogs, the 'Cats lead the series 8-6 since the first meeting back in 1986.
The Wildcats will then hit the road for a pair of tournaments, first traveling to the Wake Forest Invitational on August 31 and September 1. While in Winston-Salem, they are slated to face the Winthrop Eagles at 4:30 p.m. on the first day of competition before taking on the host Demon Deacons (12:30 p.m.) and UNC Wilmington (4:30) the following day. The 'Cats boast a 17-12 advantage over the Eagles, despite suffering a 2-3 setback last season. The 2012 season marks the fifth time since 1996 and the first since 2008 that Davidson will face Wake Forest, who holds a 4-1 series lead. The team will also use the tournament as a chance to even the score with the Seahawks of UNCW, who boast a one-match advantage in the series at 6-5.
Davidson will then head to Jacksonville, Fla., for the North Florida Invitational on September 7 and 8. Presbyterian (Sept. 7 at 4:30 p.m.) and Florida A&M (Sept. 8 at 10 a.m.) are on the schedule in addition to the host Ospreys, who the 'Cats will face on September 8 at 7 p.m. to wrap up their action in the Sunshine State. All three will be first time opponents for the Wildcats.
Back at Belk Arena, the Wildcats will host three other teams as part of the Wildcat Classic on September 14 and 15. The 'Cats are scheduled for a tilt with High Point on September 14 at 7 p.m., bringing a 9-7 series lead into the match after downing the Panthers 3-0 last season. They will return to action the following day against N.C. Central in a noon match, also leading that series 3-0. The 'Cats will then take on the Green Bay Phoenix for the first time ever at 5 p.m. that evening to finish things off.
September 21 marks the start of conference play as the Wildcats travel to Greenville, S.C., for an 8 p.m. contest at Furman. The Paladins swept last season's series 2-0, and lead the overall series 35-17. The following evening, the 'Cats will look to extend their 28-6 series lead over Wofford when they face the Terriers in Spartanburg at 6 p.m.
The Citadel and College of Charleston will travel to Belk Arena on September 29 and 30, respectively. The 'Cats own the clear lead over the Bulldogs at 26-1 after sweeping 2-0 last season, but have struggled against the Cougars at 9-28. The squad will then head to Cullowhee, N.C., on October 6 for a tilt with Western Carolina at 7 p.m. The Catamounts took the only match between the two last season to make up some ground in a tight series, but the Wildcats still claim the 22-18 lead.
A 6 p.m. contest vs. Georgia Southern on October 8 starts a three-game homestand for Davidson, who will also welcome SoCon foes Elon and UNCG to Belk Arena. The 'Cats went 0-2 vs. the Eagles in 2011 and boast a close 10-8 series lead over the Elon Phoenix, who they will face on October 12 at 7 p.m. A 2 p.m. match against the Spartans on October 14 will close out the homestand for the Wildcats as they look to avenge last season's 0-3 to the Spartans.
A four-game road swing comes next and kicks off with a 2 p.m. tilt at Chattanooga on October 20. Last season's 3-0 win over the Mocs broke the tied series to give the 'Cats the 20-19 lead and the chance to extend it another game this season. The team will then get its chance to avenge last season's SoCon Tournament loss to Samford on October 21 when they face the Bulldogs in Birmingham, Ala., at 2 p.m. Samford's two wins in 2011 give the Bulldogs the 6-1 series lead over the Wildcats since they joined the conference in 2008. The trip will then continue on to Charleston, where the Wildcats will face the College of Charleston (Oct. 27 at 5 p.m.) and The Citadel (Oct. 28 at 3 p.m.) for the second time in 2012.
Appalachian State will head to Davidson on November 3 as the 'Cats look to make it two in a row against the Mountaineers after a 3-2 win last season. Following a return trip to Statesboro, Ga., to face Georgia Southern once again on November 5 (6 p.m.), the Wildcats will close out the season at home against Furman (Nov 10 at 4 p.m.) and Wofford (Nov. 11 at 2 p.m.).
Davidson will then cap off the season by hosting the 2012 Southern Conference Volleyball Tournament at Belk Arena. The tournament is slated to run from November 16-18, with the championship game being held on Sunday.
