DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson swimmer Drew Onken was named to the 2012 CSCAA Scholar All-America Team, while teammate Geoff Peitz was named an honorable mention as the two were honored by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America for their work in the pool and the classroom during the 2011-12 season.
“Drew Onken and Geoff Peitz are each impressive examples of the best that is possible when aggressive aspirations are honestly pursued,” says Davidson head coach John Young. “Their successes are well-deserved.”
To qualify as a Scholar All-America honoree, swimmers and divers must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and qualify for their respective national championship. Student-athletes can receive honorable mention acknowledgement with a GPA of 3.5 or higher and a “B” standard qualification in their respective national championship. Both the Davidson men's and women's swimming and diving teams were recently honored by the CSCAA as Scholar All-America teams.
Onken's designation marks the first time in program history a Davidson swimmer has received the honor. He is one of just 74 swimmers and divers at the NCAA Division I level to be acknowledged. Onken, who is also a three-time Mid-Major All-American by CollegeSwimming.com, was the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association's Swimmer of the Year as well as the Swimmer of the Meet at the 2012 CCSA Championships. The Marietta, Ga., native competed in the 200-yard breaststroke as well as the 200- and 400-yard individual medley at the NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships in Seattle, Wash., this spring, placing 19th in the 400 IM. Onken, who boasts a 3.5 grade-point average, also qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials.
“This Scholar All-America recognition puts an exclamation mark on a remarkable season for Drew,” says Young, who enters his seventh season at the helm of the Wildcats. “By further differentiating himself from among the elite athletes who earn invitations to the NCAA Championship, he epitomizes the student-athlete ideal to which Davidson aspires. The Davidson Swimming and Diving family is so proud of his accomplishments.”
A CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District At-Large First Team honoree, Peitz is also a two-time Mid-Major All-America Honorable Mention. He earned titles in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke at the 2012 CCSA Championship meet and holds league records in five individual events. Peitz graduated in May with a 3.8 GPA and qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team trials in the 100-yard backstroke.
“I am so pleased for Geoff to earn this recognition again,” says Young. “His legacy and legend will impact our team for a long time, and I personally will be forever grateful for the leadership that he shared with his teammates and coaches.”
